Disabling KMS results in error when starting xorg

Hi,

after the latest kernel update I recognized a poor performance when watching flash videos in fullscreen resolution.
Thats possible due to the default enabled KMS. Hence I wanted to disable KMS via "nomodeset" or "radeon.modeset=0".
But now the start of xorg fails with following error:

Fatal server error:
Couldn't find valid PLL dividers

Here is the complete output:

I'm using a Radeon X850Pro (ATI R480) and the xf86-video-ati driver.

Does anybody know how to get xorg working with disabled KMS?

Re: Disabling KMS results in error when starting xorg

Hi, I had the same issue..the way I see it the current situation allows for X to work only when KMS is enabled. It is all explained in the following thread (be it for Intel drivers):

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 80#p742480

Since I've just done a clean install on my MacBook I did not yet have time to asses the performance as such. If you really want your old situation back you could always downgrade your kernel.

Re: Disabling KMS results in error when starting xorg

I tried to downgrade the kernel (from 2.6.33 to 2.6.32) with the result that I got the same error as before.
Then I had the idea to downgrade the package xf86-video-ati (from 6.12.192-1 to 6.12.4-3). Afterwards I could start xorg again,
even with the newest kernel (the option "nodmodeset" worked).

So it seems that there is something wrong in the new version of xf86-video-ati.
