Since the last kernel update, my modesetting has defaulted to on. I have an Aluminum iMac and for the first time I get a framebuffer that is my native resolution. But once I start X, the framebuffer appears to get messed up and when I switch to the console I get dmesg output or whatever in a crappy resolution. My video card is a Radeon HD 2400 XT and I use the catalyst-test driver.
EDIT: And when I turn modesetting off in the kernel line of grub, the console is fine, just a very crappy resolution which makes it fairly worthless to me.

I don't think catalyst is compatible with KMS. Try xf86-video-ati, or disabling KMS and using vga= to get a high-res console.

I think you are right about the catalyst not being compatible; however, I was talking with "Borgasm" on IRC and he said he uses both catalyst-test and KMS and it works fine. But xf86-video-ati won't work for Radeon HD cards, I would have to use radeonhd. And vga= does not work either. The best I can do is like 1024x768 with that. Or at least the best I used to be able to do, which still looks pretty ugly.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. "The reasons for two different drivers are historical, and starting to be a thing of the past as all the new DRM (direct rendering manager), 3D and KMS (kernel mode setting) work is done in a single place. radeonhd driver will be continued to be developed as long as it is useful."

Yeah I'll probably just try the open source drivers. The proprietary ones have been fine in the past for me when the others haven't but that looks like it's changing.

Wow, the open source driver (xf86-video-ati) works perfectly. And it solved my problem. Now I have a great console and a great... everything else. Thanks for the help.
