Hard disk bad noise

Hi everybody,
I'm experiencing some problem with my laptop hd.  Every now and then I hear a "clak" and the pc faint for about a second; then everything works fine.

No errors are reported by dmesg. I run a test with smartctl (output is here: http://pastie.org/911209) and I can't find anything wrong.

I removed laptop-mode but nothing changed.

Any ideas?

Your drive could be wearing out.  I'd make sure to keep it backed up (but I guess that's always true).

Re: Hard disk bad noise

Is it a Segate 7200RPM disk? That sound you hear is most probably the disk head parking. It's caused by too aggressive disk power management. You can disable it with:

hdparm -B 255 /dev/sdX

where X is your drive.

Re: Hard disk bad noise

ok...after trying a few days with and without hdparm command in rc.local I can state that nothing changes: "claks" are always present.

Btw my behave is quite different from the one described in the wiki: my sound is completely random (about once a day or less) and not regular as the one which could come from an aggressive power management setting.

sad

I'm testing the drive with smartctl frequently and for the moment there aro no errors reported...let's pray!:)

Re: Hard disk bad noise

I once had an Ipod that often made "clicking" noises and stopped working, the cure was to smash its side hard against something - always worked for nearly a year. Then, no more. Seriously, keep your backups up to date..
