Fresh netinstall won't boot

Kinda sucks, because I like Arch so far.

The first time I installed Arch, everything went fine. I had a good openbox/SLIM configuration, but for some reason I just got a black screen w/ a mouse that didn't move whenever I tried to use the radeon driver (which works with my card, by the way, so that wasn't the problem). By the way, if anyone has a fix for this I'd like to hear it. wink

Anyways, I uninstalled Arch and reinstalled Fedora, but after my second attempt to install Arch (I have nothing better to do), arch suddenly wouldn't boot at all after a netinstall. Doing a core install went fine, but when I tried to update it and reboot, the same thing happened as the netinstall: The screen goes on standby and the CPU is spiked at %100 (I know this because my fan goes to full speed when the CPU jumps up too high - long story). Not even doing that Skinny Elephants trick worked, so I'm guessing it was a complete kernel panic.

So anyways, does anyone have an idea of what's up? I don't exactly know how to check for logs when the system is unbootable, but in retrospect I coulda just booted into a livecd...

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

Is it even starting to load Grub?

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

Yeah, it does. For some reason, the screen goes to standby and the system locks up at about the time Udev is loaded.

Come on guys... I don't like Fedora. sad

I just looked in /var/log of a recent Arch install on this computer, and there doesn't seem to be anything there. A file called 'lastlog', but I'm not sure it's anything. I can't open it with gedit or cat.

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

Are you sure you can't open it with cat? Cat can open anything.

Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

From fedora livecd:

[root@localhost log]# cd '/media/disk/var/log'
[root@localhost log]# ls
btmp  lastlog  old  pacman.log  wtmp
[root@localhost log]# cat lastlog
[root@localhost log]#

=========
Pretty sure it won't open.

That would mean empty.

Yeah. If it wouldn't open, cat would be quick to shoot out an error

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

The only times I ever had problems booting with arch kernels was when I put my /boot partition on ext4... Now I just make a seperate /boot partition using ext3, and use nearly all the remaining space for the / partition using ext4... never had another problem after that.

Have you tried the fallback kernel in your grub menu?

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

I'm not sure if the file is empty... it says it's about 28kb in size.

And I just used the default options for the boot partition: a seperate ext2 partition.

And I'm not too sure it's my video card. Other distros run just fine. But you may be right, I suppose.

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

I've tried the fallback, yes. Same problem. It fails when it begins to load udev.

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

Try booting up with a minimum of devices connected... detach usb devices, sound card, video card if possible...  That's all I got.  Best of luck.

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

Not really sure if it is important in your case, but since that is the standard answer for "black screen after udev" (/after last kernel update) and nobody mentioned it yet: Disabled KMS?

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

That would reduce/disable 3D support for my Radeon card, wouldn't it? I use the open source radeon driver.

Oh.. hah... I use a radeon card. Could that be a part of the problem?

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

try adding:

nomodeset

to your kernel options in menu.lst

Maybe this thread might help you more if your problem is with KMS:  http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=81835

Well, look at it that way:
if it gets you through boot, you have a better base to fix 3d support tongue

Damn your Vulcan logic!

Alright, I'll give it a try (that and the nomodeset option).

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

Upside: Arch boots with nomodeset option! Awesome!

Downside: TTY is its ugly, low-resolution self again and Xorg won't run properly with radeon driver. I have to use Vesa, which sucks. When I use the Radeon driver and boot into SLIM, I get a black screen. It still accepts input though because I can input my username and password. Then I get a mouse cursor with a black screen, which isn't exactly what I wanted.

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

Which ATI video card do you have exactly? EDIT: NM, RV730 Pro AGP

Try:

radeon.modeset=0

instead of nomodeset, and ignore the error (if any)

After that I'd just think about upgrading that old $50 video card to anything else... But, I bet that might not make sense depending on the rest of your hardware... especially if you're limited to only AGP slots.

Can you get 2d acceleration with vesa drivers?  If so, that isn't the end of the world.  It's not like it was a gaming PC anyways wink

Does your motherboard have an onboard video card?  If so, try using that... it's probably on par with that agp card.

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

Ouch! Card bashing! Come on, The card ain't that bad! It's good for mild gaming. Sure my PC won't be running Crysis or anything, but it plays most games rather well. It's the perfect card for poor guys like me. Anyways, I'm not too much of a gamer.

Honestly I still wish I had my Nvidia card. It mighta been using proprietary drivers, but at least they were better supported than this ATI one.

I'll try your solution and post the results here.

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

I reinstalled Arch and the same thing happened: the system panics when udev begins to load. After around two hours of work I found that not only was the radeon driver being loaded at bootup by udev, but so was my onboard card. Apparently they conflicted and caused the panic. So blacklisting the internal video card modules worked and I managed to get the system to boot up without disabling KMS.

But I'm still having a problem. I can't start Xorg at all, because doing so causes the system to freeze. Even using the vesa drivers causes this freeze. It's pretty damned annoying. Does anyone have any ideas from here? I have the standard Xorg group installed, along with the ati, mouse, keyboard, and evdev packages. I might be missing something totally obvious... I'll check the wiki, but if you guys have any ideas let me know.

The modules I've blacklisted, by the way, are the via_agp and i2c_viapro modules. I've blacklisted them in both /etc/rc.conf and /etc/mkinitsomethingorother.conf, just to be sure. Could that be causing this?

Edit: Yeah, via_agp is for AGP cards... I got that now. Anyways, that's a part of the problem. Check this out:

Re: Fresh netinstall won't boot

Glad to see you are now using the Arch forum, not Ubuntu Just a piece of advice.
If you you use an arrogant attitude as in some of your posts people will not help you. remember nobody has to help anybody they help of their own free will, and don't need hassle
You need to give your system specs also both your Graphic card specs and anything else that may not be the norm on your system.
you also need to turn off the card you do not use in your system bias. so it does not load after post.
Good luck I'm out of here.

I'm dyslexic Please do not complain about puntuation or spelling and remember most dyslexic people have above average iq.
