Abs vs yaourt

Sorry if this the wrong forum to post, I'm new:
is abs and yaourt basically used for the same purpose?
the difference being abs is official, independent of aur and a manual method; yaourt automatically downloads and installs PKGBUILDS from aur?
I'm asking 'cos it is not immediately apparent if I need abs for yaourt to work

What you need depends on what you are trying to do. In reality, you do not need either.

To rebuild official packages with (e.g.) different configuration options or dependencies, use ABS.
To have a "helper" program build packages from the AUR, yaourt is one chioce. There are many other AUR helpers (see the wiki).

Thanks. I wanted to build a package from AUR. So that means none of those are actually needed right

Not really. You can just download the tarball and then extract it and run makepkg. See http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR … om_the_AUR and http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Aur_helpers .

It is listed in the table that yaourt isn't actively developed anymore ( but the last update was on march)
better use something else? (thinking packer )

Packer is good. So is aurget. You could try them all and pick your favourite...

Thanks again. I was going for the tool which was seemed to be used by most ppl (which is generally the one that gets bug fixes most often) and all the evidence seemed to to point to yaourt, e.g. pkg stats

There is something to say for not advertising your own product... I'm sure someone else will take care of that for you .

On a more topic related note: there is no 'vs.' since ABS and yaourt do not aim to achieve the same thing, as Allan already pointed out.

I tried 3:

yaourt -S packer
packer -S clyde-git

packer seemed faster than yaourt ( although sometimes it was unpredictable and waay slow),
and clyde was really fast.. so I'm sticking with clyde for now

Well I was a bit confused at first.. now I know that abs is more like aur: it is the sources to the supported packages, correct?

Abs for supported packages, AUR for unsupported.
