Arch Linux on Athlon 2400XP---Radeon 7500 graphics
After a full system update, I had some major graphics issues. I found that changing to the generic vesa driver cleared it.
With the package manager, I found that the installed package was "xf86-video-ati-git". This looked strange so I searched what was available (in the Arch repos) and found "xf86-video-ati 6.12.192-1", which I promptly installed. Now everything is working fine.
What was the Arch update process doing to me?

The Arch update process did not do anything to you. At some stage, you installed the git package, and not from any official repo, because it has never been in one. If you don't remember doing that, your pacman log will tell you when you installed it. It would have replaced the official xf86-video-ati package, so you weren't getting any updates for that. As you were apparently unaware that the git package was installed, presumably you were not updating it either - hence your major graphics issues.

Indeed, I did install ati-git!! It was immediately after an upgrade. I have no clue what the issue was---ie WHY I installed the git version (but I would not have done it just out of boredom---presumably something was broken in that upgrade). It worked fine until the latest upgrade obviously broke it.
Thanks!!!!
