Is compiling a custom kernel for GeForce FX 5900XT my only choice?

My box works well with kernel 2.6.24. When I make full upgrade, I always get a kernel panic. When I make upgrade but ignore kernel26, I get error like this:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=27984
but there is no hd* or sd* in /dev

I found out that the problem is my VGA card: GeForce FX5900XT
If I remove the card, everything works well.

What should I do? I don't want to stuck with the old kernel. I try compiling a custom kernel for NVIDIA card like this guide but I failed:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml

The only working kernel accept 2.6.24 is Gentoo genkernel, but I don't like Gentoo, everything is compile from source .

Try doing a full update and not using nvidia proprietary drivers (use nv). If the system works (but of course without 3D acceleration) you'll know the source of the problem.

The weird thing is that I haven't install anything other than core system, it works if I don't upgrade. But if I full upgrade the system afterwards, it panics.
