directory structure not available

Occasionally, after resuming, file managers (thunar/pcmanfm) and "open file" menus are blank, but I am able to navigate via ls and cd. 

I am using xfce4.  There is no indication in pm-suspend.log that anything went wrong.

What could be causing this?
