How to go into 'safe mode' ?

So i had awesome3 installed, but i made a mistake in my rc.lua file, and now whenever i boot up and start x, i can't do anything except seeing the awesome3 wallpaper. I can't launch any programs, or right click. Is there a way where when i boot up my computer, i don't automatically log in to x and boot into terminal? I did that auto log in so no matter what i press i can't stop booting into x right now. Got some files in there i want to retrieve before I reformat if i have to. The main thing i need to do is somehow, edit rc.lua before computer boots into x.

You can switch run levels at boot: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Display_Manager has details...

Grub boot parameters are the way to go. Just append the runtime you want to your kernel line.
For instance
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda5 ro single
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda5 ro 3

Both single (1) and 3 should have the desired effect.
