Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have installed catalyst-test+xorg (from extra)+ kernel26-rc (2.6.34-rc5-rc) on my Dell 1555 (ATI 4570).
Al is work ok, except resume from suspend (I get a black screen on resume)
With catalyst-10.1-10.3 (kernel < 2.6.34) all is working but when resume from suspend temperature is 0C and fan is stopped.
Is some way to make suspend/restore to work with catalyst-test?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@snack, Thanks for the tip, but being as I don't know much about how to read xorg.conf it seems tough to use. In the meantime I found a way to make amdcccle work again - there's a way to disable xRandR 1.2. After doing that, Catalyst stops segfaulting and I can set up my big desktop.

Now I'm just having one more weeeeeiird problem, which is that when set to 1920x1080 (supposedly its native resolution) my LG FLATRON M237WD displays everything with big black borders. Fidding with the monitor display modes ("Just Scan", "Set by Program", "16:9") can change the size of them but they won't go away entirely. That weird part is that I get small to nonexistant borders when I use amdcccle to set the resolution to a non-native one like 1680x1050. Documentation on this monitor seems pretty slim, to say the least, so I'm pretty confused.

P.S. I'm using HDMI right now - haven't tried any other cable types since I don't have any on hand and the 5770 only has 3 outputs (2 HDMI, one DVI, the latter of which is being used by my other monitor).

HDMI output is uncool with catalyst. I think you may want to try DVI...I could get to work my TV panel _ONLY_ with  plain old VGA cable with xorg (even with nvidia) correctly...so in my experience that's a gray area with linux drivers...  (and windows Catalyst doesnt work properly either - HDMI is a strict signal , as it looks)

It sounds like it's worth a try, though I currently don't have any DVI cables sitting around. I'll see if I can get one from a friend to try out. Doesn't explain why it used to work with the old 9.11 Catalyst and 1.7.4 Xorg server back on Ubuntu though.

One other thing I'm getting now is that if I fullscreen mplayer, depending on which screen it fullscreens to, it either works fine or displays in a corner of my virtual desktop (my monitors are somewhat vertically offset) with garbage covering the rest of both screens. Earlier today it would work for the big screen and break for the small screen; then it started breaking for the big screen and working for the small screen. Now (after disabling and re-enabling some stuff in Catalyst) it's back to working on the big one. Used to be able to fullscreen things to either screen successfully...

Looking at my xorg.conf, it's kind of a mess. Any idea why I would need four "Monitor" sections?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Finally with this latest Ubuntu driver I can say to be happy with my 5850 card under linux!!

Everything is OK! Not a crash since the install. XVba works, Unigine works (have problems with AA, but without is ok), I can play penumbra perfectly and KDE effects work.

AND I CAN USE xorg 1.7!!

I love this driver big_smile

Bye

With kernel 2.6.30.../ 2.6.31... and catalyst suspend/restore is working with noapic option at kernel line  (sensors and fan is ok after resume), but sometime when laptop is running after several minutes I am not able to change display brightness and in dmesg report:

EC: input buffer is not empty, aborting transaction

(is known bug https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13689"
I think that bug is solved in 2.9.34 kernel, but is problem with restore from suspend (probably because of catalyt-test driver).

I have the following boot line:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/156cc9c7-0889-4962-8365-614f0ed4db6e ro noapic acpi_brightness=vendor

My brightness keys seem to be working all the time (I used to have big problems with them), but the overheating after resume is a problem. Maybe I need a newer version of catalyst.
I do not think the acpi_brightness line at boot solved my brightness problem, I think it was solved when I installed "acpi-support" from aur.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have a ATI 4770 and have loaded the catalyst-test using the makepkg -s and pacman  -U *pkg.tar.xz way.
My xorg was copied from the Ubuntu 10.04RC version which was functioning well.
However after booting in it gives me the terminal login prompt instead of the KDE login window.
I have tried with and without the nomodeset option on kernel command without success.
Please help and let me know if I need to provide you with any additional information.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@ozooha: can you please encase your log in ["code]your log here["/code] tags? (write it without " signs)

Strangely enough, using a DVI cable did fix the problem with the borders. God knows what is wrong with Catalyst and HDMI. I'm lucky I had a friend who had a spare. Thanks, timong, for the suggestion.

Now, I'm still having that weird problem with only being able to fullscreen mplayer to one of the two, but it's currently working with the one that I usually want to fullscreen to, so I can work out the problem later if at all.

In any case, it looks like I'm out of AMD Hell and on to finding and installing various apps and utilities that'll be useful... which is, in many ways, the fun part. Huzzah!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@ozooha:
<sigh> don't know...

the only thing thats "bad" in your xorg.conf is that dfp3 monitor (samsung) should have:
     Option        "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
instead of:
    Option        "PreferredMode" "1680x1050"

but that shouldnt manifest as "Floating point exception" of xserver...
Try to change that but i dont believe in any success here.
modprobe fglrx works fine?

Hmm... try maybe to use [catalyst-test-xorg18] repo with xserver 1.8 (only for 2.6.33-ARCH kernel, type `uname -r` to get this info):
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 53#p740353

If no change - try maybe to use [catalyst] repo with xserver 1.6 (again if you are using 2.6.33-ARCH kernel): http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 91#p712491

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have found a strange feature, when I try to pm-suspend with running ATI Overclocking Utility X32 my laptop can't resume correctly. Every time it starts whit login window and new kde session after login. I use catalyst-test, xorg-server-1.7-catalyst-maximize-fix & kernel26 from [core].
Can anybody confirm this feature?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Kismet010: what about "acpi-support" from aur? I think it was that one that solved all my brightness trouble. (not 100% sure though, I tried a lot of things)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I haven't seen yet a thread with more Views than this one! At the monent result is 225324 views, and over 1700 replies! This tells me that Ati is the biggest pain in the ass in Linux world. It is definetly time for Ati, and Nvidia too, to seriously consider their support for us.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Indeed, aur's catalyst http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29111 has been updated

Not much change between this and catalyst-test...
xserver 1.7 support, and patched xserver 1.8 support.
Version of 2d driver = 8.72.5 (for newest catalyst-test it was 8.72.11)
Version of opengl lib = 3.2.9756 (no change between this and catalyst-test)
For kernel newer than 2.6.32 we still need to use (included) patches.
Works also with 2.6.34-rc5

[catalyst] repo will be updated soon, [catalyst-xorg18] repo will also arrive soon smile

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

BTW xserver 1.8 should soon arrive in extra, so i've prepared [xorg17] repo with xserver 1.7 and other needed packages for future use to people who have problems with xserver 1.8...

With package xorg-server which is patched with backclear patch
and package xorg-server-1.7-catalyst-maximize-fix which is patched with fedora patch (thanks dcc24)

Add this above all repos in /etc/pacman.conf:

For i686:

For x86_64:

And here are direct links to patched xservers 1.7:
