Everything was working using the stock kernel (2.6.30-ARCH) that came when I installed Arch back in Sep '09 so I put the kernel26 package in the IgnorePkg variable in pacman.conf. However it's feeling a little long in the tooth and I'd like to upgrade but I'm finding not a lot of documentation about upgrading stock kernels.
If I remove the kernel package from the IgnorePkg variable and upgrade it how does it affect my already installed and working kernel? Will it be overwritten or will it be made into a backup? Are there any other pitfalls to look out for?

It is overwritten. But you can always create a custom kernel or install kernel26-lts as a fallback.
