sound always muted on boot

After recent upgrades my system always mutes the sound after I restart the computer. I using 2.6.33 and Gnome 2.30.

Strangely, the volume controls in the panel do not show that sound is muted. It is only apparent if I hit the volume multimedia keys and get the popup image in the middle of the screen. That popup image shows that the sound is muted. So I unmute sound using the multimedia keys and then on the next start up it's always muted again.

Thanks. That worked. I wonder why my settings were lost in the first place, after upgrades?
