Asus 1005PE weird brightness behaviour

I just installed Arch on my new Asus 1005PE netbook and so far pretty much everything seems to work fine except one thing which is driving me nuts.

The brightness control is completely random. I get maximum brightness when the slider is at about 75% and the rest of it is not even worth describing as it is really, really random. This happens both when I use the Fn keys or, say a gnome applet for brightness.

It is especially annoying in combination with power management when the screen gets dimmed and then when I start using the netbook again it jumps to what it thinks is a high value I suppose but due to the randomness it actually ends up dimming the screen even more.

Any suggestions regarding EEE PC and brightness control, any at all?

P.S. If it's worth anything on the Windows installation that came with it brightness worked normally.

I'm on a eee 1001p, but this solution might help you as well (last post).

Re: Asus 1005PE weird brightness behaviour

Thanks but that would not be it, and it most certainly is not a solution, a possible workaround at best.

However, in the meantime I managed to pull off a different workaround.
I had to update BIOS to the latest version and then add acpi_osi=Linux in grub (as suggested in 1005HA guide here on Arch wiki) The backlight control would actaully work properly now.. BUT!

It only works when I use Fn keys, so the problem I posted still persists. Backlight manipulation through /proc/acpi/video... is still impossible and as random as before (if somewhat more predictable as it goes from min to max about three times but still provides no reliable backlight control)

Re: Asus 1005PE weird brightness behaviour

I just updated my bios (I think they use the same bios, and even though i am on a 1001p the bios rom was called 1005p).

Anyways, that, coupled with your workaround of using acpi_osi=Linux has everything working for me. I can use xbacklight -set to accurately control the backlight (for some reason it doesn't like 100 as a value, but it still works for 0 as the lowest and 99 as the highest, no cycling like what was happening before).

I still can't get it as bright as if i were to do '# setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=ff', but that sets it so bright that it is practically sering my eyes, so no complaints.

Might be something worth looking in to. Let me know if it helps.

EDIT: ok so there are still some problems. I can now set the backlight  with xbacklight -set as per normal, same with the function keys, however using the function keys don't change the xbacklight number... It's a start i suppose...

Re: Asus 1005PE weird brightness behaviour

load the eeepc_laptop module (be sure to include the module in your /etc/rc.conf file), and add:

acpi_osi=Linux

to your kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst

that'll solve your problem.
