Java slow connection and cut offs

Hello to all!

Everything is fine with my new archlinux and I'm amazed of the good work of you guys! I'd like to keep it, but there is a small but important problem as follows:

I installed Java mainly for playing my favourite game called go. From a commandline I open the following:

aoss javaws http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban.jnlp

to connect with the kgs go-server. It takes a long time to have java webstart running the application, and it takes a long time to launch the gameserver. Much more time than I experienced on other distros. Ok, then everything seems to be fine, I can watch games and hear sound, but - when I start to play, after a few moves, the gamegui freezes, the connection is cut and I have to start again with the whole thing. It does not happen every time, but approx. 7 of 10 times it does.

I run arch at an older laptop toshiba satellite m30x-134 with 1gb ram and 1,7ghz. I installed java from sun because this was working with aoss so I can listen to music while playing. The probs occur with both java versions, jre from sun and openjdk6, I tried each and removed it before installing the next one.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any hints

Martin

Re: Java slow connection and cut offs

I can't think of what would be the problem. You might try using the PKGBUILD from the AUR:

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=11601

Now, I don't think that will solve your problem. But, I thought I  would point it out. It will allow you to manage updates more easily, provide desktop shortcuts, and you will be able to run the client just with "cgoban3".
