Why somtime I can't resize the windows?

Recent I wanted to try the tilling WM. I chose awesome. But this problem really bothered me. Sometime I can't resize the windows, using both MOD4+ h/l or MOD4+mouse. Did anyone meet the same problem before? The version is always the newest.

is it happening with all programs, or just specific ones?
