Shouldn't you have your /dev/sr0 somewhere in fstab?
Try removing '#' from the line w/ your cd or dvd device.
/dev/cdrom /media/cd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0Offline
thank you for the reply, however that didnt help
from what i have read all the commented lines in fstab should be that way, not sure about sr0, however every other disc media mounts and works, just not the audio cd's which i believe i read are not actually mounted except by xine or vlc etc....meh sometimes i feel like i know enough to get in trouble but not enough fix it.

'abcde -d /dev/sr0 -o flac' runs fine here
Offline
$ abcde -d /dev/sr0 -o flac
cd-discid: /dev/sr0: CDROMREADTOCHDR: No medium found
[ERROR] abcde: CD could not be read. Perhaps there's no CD in the drive?
and just in case
# abcde -d /dev/sr0 -o flac
cd-discid: /dev/sr0: CDROMREADTOCHDR: No medium found
[ERROR] abcde: CD could not be read. Perhaps there's no CD in the drive?

i have a dual boot, just replicated my the results on windows XP,
can a dvd/cd drive not play mp3's but everything else? like a hardware problem?

Audio CD doesn't have a file system, so you don't have mp3's in there. Are you trying to play a data CD w/ mp3s w/o mounting it?
What happens if you try a regular CD - the one you can buy in a store and play on your hi-fi?
Offline
it has been with store bought cd's
one cd did work however it had some video on it and .sfw files, thus a different type of file
regular ol audio cd's do not work

inserted blank cd
k3b would let me burn a data cd, but if i try to burn a wave or audio cd it acts if i have not inserted a blank cd yet.
thunar does recognize the blank cd and asks what i would like to do with it.

Maybe the audio CDs employ some DRM scrambling? Can you play them on a hi-fi / discman? Can you try playing them on another computer?
I'm sorry, I'm running out of ideas: it may be a problem w/ the CDs or w/ your drive but I don't really understand how can you watch movies then?

well this morning i tried a different cd then cd's. now i was trying 2 random, apparently non damaged cd's last night and they did not work. the one i try this morning works!
however the 2 that didnt work on my arch last night will play on a different computer of ubuntu flavor.
2 things here: i cant believe i randomly grabbed 2 audio cd's last night that didnt work...out of 100's that apparently do. i cant believe one linux OS works and the other does not with those 2. so thanks for help, still kinda confused though.

I had a similar problem on Windows a couple years ago. Linux distros are quite different (Ubuntu <-> Arch), but WinXp shouldn't be.
On my WinXp the CD was "invisible", but five or six other people had no problems with it - and they were using WinXp on they computers too.
Such is life :-)

Make sure the CDs you are trying are Red Book compliant. There has been a lot of crap on the market with all sorts of DRM to prevent illegal copying. A lot of the software will emulate a standard audio CD but this only works on Windows (and Mac).
