Awesome user config won't work?

I just installed Awesome. The basic user config works perfectly.
Now, I'm trying to use another user config, such as:
http://git.sysphere.org/awesome-configs … 4.3.tar.gz

Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Every time I call startx, the screen goes blank. Only the cursor is visible.
The other user config files also give the same result.

Could this be caused by lack of desktop environment (I don't install it), or programs used on the config (firefox, nitrogen ,etc) ?

The config uses vicious library which is not included in the tarball.

OK. I just followed the procedure on that page.
And the result is still... nothing.

As stated many times before, you cannot just copy that config and expect it to work. You need to take parts of it, fix the values and make it work for your system.

Take into account that the "adaption to your system" is largely an adaptation to awesome current release, since few aspects are actually system-dependent.

It's actually the opposite, the config file references file systems, mail boxes, network devices etc. It is kept up to date with awesome current.
