I tried to update my arch install today using pacman -Syu. Update started and I continued my work. However, my laptop froze mid-update (no error messages/warnings). I waited for ~10-15mins but there was no response to keyboard or mouse. CPU fan started revving up and went at full speed for a while before I hard rebooted the system. Now Grub comes up but my machine does not boot anymore. I get the following error messages:
switch_root: can't execute '/sbin/init': Input Output error
kernel_panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init
PID: 1, comm: switch_root not tainted 2.6.33-ARCH #1

Or Is my installation toast? All my data is backed up so I can reinstall if need be, but am hoping that I don't have to resort to that.

Input - Output errors... sounds like your hard drive isn't working like it should... Something at hardware level had appened... Maybe you should check you laptop for stability problems and hdd errors... hirens boot cd is a good starting point to help you.
You can always tray to boot the arch install cd and do a fsck to your arch setup....
