Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

WoW!!! smile KDE is now snappier than ever with 10.4 catalyst on my HD4500 mobility radeon. smile

The Problem, more or less a confusion I have is I installed xorg server 1.8 but the comand X -version says it is 1.7x

$ X -version

This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation.
It is not supported in any way.
Bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
Select the "xorg" product for bugs you find in this release.
Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions please check the
latest version in the X.Org Foundation git repository.

pacman tells a different story

# pacman -S catalyst-xorg18/xorg-server
warning: xorg-server-1.8.0.901-1 is up to date -- reinstalling

Also had this trouble while upgrading to xorg-server 1.8

 :: xorg-server: requires xf86-input-evdev>=2.3.2-2
:: xorg-server-1.8-catalyst-maximize-fix: requires xf86-input-evdev>=2.3.2-2

but solved it by getting package from http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver … put-evdev/

It is correct: catalyst 10.4 won't start if it detects xorg-server > 1.7, even if it works with xorg-server 1.8. So the PKGBUILD patches the version number to make it appear as 1.7, but true version is 1.8.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

The version number 1.7.5 is due to a patch in the xorg-server package of the catalyst-xorg18 repo. This is expected behavior as it makes fglrx work. Don't worry smile

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello, i've just installed catalyst drivers v 10.4 and xorg-server-1.7-catalyst-maximize-fix 1.7.6. My hd 4670 is working great.
I'm wondering: how much cpu should an mkv H264 video in 1080p take? I'm using both mplayer and vlc, and it consumes about 30%. Should it be less? I've been trying all the video modes in mplayer, and the one that takes less cpu is xvmc...
I don't wanna be OT, i'll eventually open another thread. Thank you!
No other problems to report, btw smile

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@spidernik84: 30% is normal result. With vaapi - which is most appropriate way of viewing hd videos - cpu consumption should be smaller, but not much smaller. vaapi is still under development.

I have a Dell Studio Laptop HD4500 mobility Radeon card, with 2.4Ghz Core2Duo. I use mplayer.

Using -vo gl or gl2 the cpu usage was 60-100% of 1 core. With absolutely 0% GPU usage.
Using -vo vaapi the cpu usage was 3-5% which is AMAZING!!!! much better that Windows's CPU usage. The GPU usage varies form 30-40%. The Core speed is lifted to 600MHz from 220MHz. GPU temp stays @ about 60 deg c.

So I'd recommend VAAPI.

Post #1777 reads:

Vi0L0 wrote:

[catalyst-test-xorg18] repo has got different address now, more here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 53#p740353

... (more)

Do not add any new xserver Section into your /etc/X11/xorg.conf - this file is still used by catalyst - i mean ie dont add any Section "InputClass" into xorg.conf cuz when you do this both aticonfig and amdcccle wont start cuz of parsing xorg.conf error (just use /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory for it)

I have a question, is this the right method for installing the latest AMD driver? I've been out for a while and I'm planning to install the latest driver, and I would like to be sure to install the driver following the right steps.

Thanks.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@jgaldon:
every repo has got different version of catalyst (+ some additional packages like xorg-server etc)
[catalyst] repo contains newest stable catalyst driver, should always work with stock kernel and is updated most frequently:

So... read this post carefully - you may skip archive repos section and jump to step 2.

[catalyst-xorg18] and [catalyst-test-xorg18] repos are designed for testers.

I was planning to add a section to the catalyst wiki concerning vaapi, but i'm sure you're the most suited person here to do this (it's not a way to demand all the hard work to you, trust me big_smile I can write this part, in case. Just let me figure out how to enable vaapi on gnome-mplayer, since it's working from terminal with mplayer).

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Nice work with those repos :-) I would also like to see them in the wiki page.
Now if you guys could help me i'd be very glad cause i've been struggling all day to get it to work...
Actually it all started when I tried to enable compiz with the radeon driver giving the command

dbus-launch "fusion-icon"

Thank you for your great work. I just added the Video Acceleration section to the italian version of the catalyst page.

EDIT: i'm encountering some problems using va-api with smplayer: i've been thouroughly following your advice from the wiki, specifying the correct parameters in the gui to offload the processing on the gpu, but to no avail, still 30% of cpu.
From terminal with mplayer, everything is fine, cpu 1-2%. Same trouble with gnome-mplayer. I must be missing something hmm

Ie. for smplayer:
Options -> Preferences -> General -> Video (tab) -> Output driver: User Defined : vaapi:gl
Options -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Options for MPlayer -> Options: -va vaapi

Is this enough?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

So after installing from the repos as per the wiki, I get the following problem:

$ fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer

and nothing else appears until i Ctrl+c the program. Also,

glxinfo
name of display: :0.0

has the same stalling problem, nothing appears except what i pasted above and I have to Ctrl+c again.

Glxgears and fglrxinfo give absolutely no output at all.

I had the exact same problem on Ubuntu 10.04, and another guy with the same card has it too - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1472309 (mine is HD 3450).

Any ideas?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@spidernik84: LOL! Actually i haven't used mplayer for maybe 2-3 months, only smplayer - i was happy cuz of no flickering with vaapi:gl and nice work with compiz... Cpu usage wasnt problem cuz only one of my cores gotta work...
Now if im running mplayer -vo vaapi:gl -va vaapi all colours are broken, and kwin is sometimes crushing to death with full screen(!), but in fact cpu usage is minimal... some log:

[vo_vaapi] Using OpenGL rendering
libva: libva version 0.31.0-sds6
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/va/drivers/fglrx_drv_video.so
libva: va_openDriver() returns 0
==========================================================================
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
[b][VD_FFMPEG] VA API accelerated codec.[/b]
Selected video codec: [ffh264] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg H.264)
==========================================================================

Then i runned mplayer -vo vaapi:gl and everything is like with smplayer (correct colours, good work with kwin, high cpu usage)... some log:

[vo_vaapi] Using OpenGL rendering
libva: libva version 0.31.0-sds6
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/va/drivers/fglrx_drv_video.so
libva: va_openDriver() returns 0
==========================================================================
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Selected video codec: [ffh264] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg H.264)
==========================================================================

Soooo... as you can see vaapi is using OpenGL rendering, but without acceleration.
So smplayer isn't using the -va vaapi switch at all.
Still its good for me - cuz i have got correct colours, but without video acceleration. I will search for answer, but guess it will be hard to find + its useless for me (thos colours really sux)...

Edit: Buu aaahahahaa! You will never guess howto turn -va vaapi in smplayer! smile Just turn off screenshots(!) in Preferences -> General -> General -> Screenshots... Its working - minimal cpu usage, broken colours and problems with kwin  - yeeeey ;P
Edit2: well okay those problems with colours and kwin exists only for my few files - hd testing files...

Same situation here (quite logical because I have the same laptop). Unfortunately I'm quite busy for the moment, I don't have much time to look for a solution.
