Hello,
My Dell Studio 1558 arrived yesterday. I wanted to install Arch on it. I used the 64bit install CD I also used for my Desktop PC.
The selection screen appears and I can select "boot archlinux live cd". Then it outputs the usual stuff. It lists "direct acces to <hdd>". instead of hdd it names brand and model.
After some time it displays:
driver "sr" needs updating please use bus_methods
Then it immediately passes to an output "waiting 30 seconds for /dev/archiso"
The next output is "device did not show up you can try to fix manually" and it drops me to a ramfs prompt.
Nothing more.
If I use ubuntu karmic cd and boot live it will just freeze.
Is there any hidden protection mechanism? I already changed from AHI to ATA or whatever this option was called, disabled fast boot up stuff.
I would appreciate any help.

I have a Studio XPS 16. Try adding the following kernel options if/when you're given the oppotunity:
acpi_osi="Linux" pci=use_crs
Worked wonders for me with the 2.6.33 kernel.

Just to make sure i did it right.
In the bootmenu i have to select "kernel" and hit e.
To the end I add your mentioned commands and hit enter.
Then I selected and booted. (by hitting b)
Still the same.

I used the ftp image to install, and it was a few months back. I didn't need the parameters with kernel versions < 2.6.33.
Make sure the notebook is plugged in when you boot it. The kernel tends not to find some ACPI stuff when not plugged in. Even with the parameters.
I have the AHCI mode specified for the SATA drives.
I'm not sure if that's the proper way to edit the grub lines or not, since I don't have either one in front of me.
Did you try the parameters with both cds? Have you tried the lucid install cd?

I don't think it's related to the things you mentioned. If I select AHCI I get I/O Error on device sr0.
I might try the archboot later
Edit: Oh, after a thousands of I/O erros (all the same number) it starts to load udev and modules. I'm now at tty1!
Thanks anyway.
