Re: hardcore cmd line users are lost in time???

Myself I don't use CLI programs very often, mostly because I'm very bad at remembering the commands. big_smile However I still prefer minimalism, so I use light GUI programs - Xfce as desktop, MPD + Sonata for music etc.

I always use command line programs when I'm going to type a lot of text. Mostly programming (Emacs). It's much faster when I don't have to use a mouse. Also when I need to do modify a large amount of files at once, such as (un)packing - no GUI program will ever beat 7z x *.zip smile And finally Nethack. tongue

What I hate about many GUI programs is that they bombard me with information, while the usable area is smaller. In Emacs for example I have the whole screen usable except for a few rows at the bottom, and there is nothing unnecessary.

I would love a GUI interface which could be modified just like the user wants. All the buttons could be re-arranged, removed, resized or added if necessary. Keyboard shortcuts and buttons could be changed to any command. That way newbies could have an easy to use interface with everything clearly visible, while advanced users could have only a few buttons and a lot of keyboard shortcuts.

Lol, I just ran ed (never heard of it before) and my session was pretty much identical to the "typical novice's session with the mighty ed".
