Problem with CD/DVD drive symlinks [solved - hardware failure]

Hi,

I'm an old and glad Arch user (for five years or so now) and have always been afraid of the hal-udev-dbus triplet, using it with the flow and hoping for the system to work ok. Lately, though, I've been having problems with K3B and Grip not identifying my optical drive. Since I had no idea of where to start, here is what I did:

When I issue the "mplayer dvd://1" command as root or as user, I get the following:

Playing dvd://1.
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access
libdvdread: Can't stat /dev/dvd
No such file or directory
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/dvd
Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd (No such file or directory)
No stream found to handle url dvd://1

So I figured this could be a problem with the udev symlinks (unknown territory for me). Searching the internet, I found the following stat command about it:

[root@acer tositstill]# ls -lR /dev/disk/
/dev/disk/:

Lastly, when I list /sys/block, I only get sda/ and sdb/, I found that suspicious since my CD/DVD drive usually gets created in /dev/hda or /dev/cdrom or /dev/dvd.

I did all this both with an empty drive and with a cd in it. The results were the same.

I think it may be a problem with the last UPDATE I did, three days ago. Has anyone faced the some issue?

I thought maybe I should roughly create a symlink for udev, do you think maybe thats the solution? I found this website telling me how to do it: http://reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html

I appreciate any help on this,

Maria (from Brazil). =]

[I figured I should list the versions I have:

udev 151-3
dbus-1.2.24-1
hal-0.5.14-2]

EDIT: it was a hardware problem. =]

Re: Problem with CD/DVD drive symlinks [solved - hardware failure]

I have the same problem.

I realized it this morning while trying to brun a CD, and K3B claimed that there were no cdrom on the system!

I will try to find a solution, and if so, I'll post it here wink

Re: Problem with CD/DVD drive symlinks [solved - hardware failure]

I'm sorry, I should've edited this post.

Later I had the idea of going to the bios and checking to see if my hardware was even recognized at first, and it wasn't. It's probably broken. Did you do this? I got to thinking that its rather unlikely that the system would fail to recognize the CD/DVD drive since its needed for the installation, don't you think? It should be very stable.
