My sound is not working. I checked the mixer and my speakers but that didn't change anything. This is literally my first day using arch linux. I am familiar with linux and the kde desktop environment but I do not know how to fix this. Basically, this is the first time I have ever had a sound problem with a linux distribution so I obviously do not know how to fix it.
Thanks.

Have you installed alsa?
Offline
I used chakra to install arch so yes. It appears I have alsa-lib and also-utils installed so I must have alsa installed.
Offline
Just to be sure, have you tried to run "alsaconf"? It'll try to automatically configure your sound devices to work with alsa, no need to muck about with your configuration files. Type 'alsaconf' at the prompt.
Depending on your sound card this will have varying levels of success. Hope it helps though!

I went through it and it said no legacy drivers are available.

I just tried to run that and got this:
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.32-ARCH/modules.dep: No such file or directory
Offline
Did you run it as root?
EDIT: Try rebooting. Did you just upgrade the kernel?

I installed arch today using the chakra live cd. Then I updated whatever needed to be updated. Is there a way I can go back and look up what updated?
I just tried to run it as root again and I got the same message. I will try rebooting like you suggested and I will edit this post with the result.
I have now rebooted. When I enter the code now, it does absolutely nothing:
[root@brian-desktop brian]# modprobe snd-hda-intel
[root@brian-desktop brian]#

That is good If it returns nothing then there is a 99.9% chance it works. Can you run alsaconf now?
Offline
No Supported pnp or pci card found.
Would you like to probe legacy ISA sound cards/chips?
<Yes> <No>
I picked yes.
Probing legacy ISA cards might make your system unstable.
Do you want to proceed?
<Yes> <No>
I picked yes.
Now I am having it probe the legacy cards. It installed some stuff.
I am now going to restart to see if anything changes.
I have now restarted and my sound still doesn't work.
Edit again: I am now running alsaconf again just to see what it does.

are you sure that the sound is not muted?
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

According to kmixer and system settings, it is not. My speakers are up too.
The alsaconf supposedly did something but the sound still doesn't work.
It is also weird how my friend who also installed chakra today did not have to set up anything to get his sound working..

can you run alsamixer in a terminal and do a screenshot to it and post it here?

I don't know your setup, but try unmuting Speaker and Speaker 1. Master should control it, but you never know. Use the arrow keys to control it and click "m" to toggle mute/unmute
Offline
Yes, that was the problem. My sound now works. KMix never told me if I had my speakers muted so I would have never realized.
Thanks a ton!

No problem Don't forget to append [SOLVED] to the title of the thread by editing the first post.
