I just heard about this. They are going to have a music store, mobile contacts and other features to compete with microsoft and apple.

It seems pretty cool, and I think other linux OS's would be able to install the software also. Do you think this would increase linux adoption to the masses? It seems like people are obsessed with media these days.

Ubuntu has an English Unabridged Dictionary of unfixed and dusty bugs. They could fix them. Or they could make a new theme, and make a new software downloading website. Guess which is easier, and guess which they chose to do.

No. Which is disappointing, to say the least... It's still in beta, so perhaps there will come a day when it is a replacement for Dropbox.

Its theoretically possible to get it working on arch. You have to install the indicator-me panel plugin along with ubuntu one. (edit: acutally, they have a limited cli for ubuntu one, https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubun … t/+faq/971) It IS very very buggy, but I think it will get better. Weirdly enough it can only be accessed via the panel. But there's also a rhythmbox plugin to get music from the store. I think it pretty much only supports gnome and xfce right now. (with the gnome-panel plugin for xfce)

I think having a commercial aspect to desktop linux will encourage more companies to make software and services that support linux. Ubuntu One might also entice people away from their dependance on itunes and zune stores.

Ubuntu is far from perfect, but they DO drive a lot of innovation within linux and they are large enough to be able to stand up for the interests of linux users.

I'm certainly not going to go back to using Ubuntu as my main desktop, but I don't think Ubuntu is ALL bad.

It does more than just let people download music. You can sync your email and IM contacts, synch your IM history, tomboy notes and browser bookmarks across desktops. Supposedly they use better encryption than dropbox does. It seems pretty useful. They give you 2 GB free at first, and charge money for more online space.

Of course someone could probably set up something similar using their own web server and some scripts. But a lot of new linux users can't do that, or don't have a server to use, etc

I agree Ubuntu really needs to stop focusing on the GUI so much and work more on their enormous list of bug reports. But at the same time many users only care about how their computer looks... since all they do is browse the web and listen to music/watch movies.

I got tired of my grandfather calling me up with problems from vista, so I stuck linux mint on his computer and he he hasn't had a problem since. (he pretty much only uses the browser)

Does Ubuntu know about this HTTP webmail trend? Or that Opera as well as Firefox has made syncing bookmarks easy for years now? Never heard of Tomboy nots, but oh well.

Before I switched to Arch I used Ubuntu on this desktop (I also still have a netbook with UNR) and tried out Ubuntu One (including the then beta repository). It was pretty neat as far as the cloud capabilities. I tested storing files in the cloud as well as using the special extension for firefox, Bindwood, which also allowed me to store my bookmarks within U1 (Ubuntu One cloud). Everything I tried did work with only minor bugs at the time.

Regarding the music selection and the store, I will be verbose about this and just state that I've always sort of gotten the impression that such things were more about making money for Canonical than anything. Although I can see how it might be beneficial to Linux users in general. I notice Canonical has a lot of for-profit offerings lately including the new monitoring service, Landscape: http://www.canonical.com/projects/landscape While I can't say that this is necessarily a bad thing, I have to admit that it makes me slightly nervous when I consider everything as a whole.

no. ubuntu doesn't push their patches upstream and we are not patching our packages to add extra features

This is a rather old thread but I didn't want to open a new one on the subject.

I inquired with Ubuntu One's customer service about whether they were pursuing packaging their client for other distros in light of an imminent Windows release, and this is what they said:

Hi,
We don't have packages available for other Linux distributions but would
like to work with anyone who is interested in packaging Ubuntu One for
other distributions. If you or someone you know is interested in doing
this for Arch or any other Linux distro, please let me know and I'll get
you in touch with the right people on the Ubuntu One team.

I personally don't feel like I could work on creating a PKGBUILD, although I saw an out of date one in the AUR. Seems like Canonical wouldn't be opposed to helping people if they're interested. I personally preferred Ubuntu One to Dropbox, and would like to use it (especially if I start to require paid storage since it's cheaper last time I checked), so if someone could work on that it'd be awesome.

If not I won't get upset haha. Still prefer Arch to Ubuntu.

Update on UbuntuOne vs. Dropbox theme here:
UbuntuOne just increased their free storage to 5 GB vs. Dropbox 2 GB.

you should check out strato hidrive https://hidrive.strato.com: 5GB for free and you can access it via every common protocol (ssh, sftp, ftp, https, smb, webdav, etc)

The all-in-one package is nice, but it isn't too hard to set up something yourself with a home server running Arch or something like FreeNas or Amahi.
