Question about Xmodmap and modifier keys

I've been reading up on Xmodmap because I want to have the keyboard combination "Alt+q" give 1 from the numberpad. I know that the following code means because of the wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xmodmap):

keycode 24 = q Q q Q q Q

But I don't know is what AltGr and mode_switch are, I'm guessing that I'll have to redefine my alt key to be the AltGr or mode_switch operator or something? Also, how can I specify that I want output from the number pad 1, can I use the hex keys?
