Firefox PGO

I heard that PGO is supposed to be optimized for your system and that people report it to be a lot faster than normal. I did some tests with Peacemaker the other night and this is what I got:

Firefox from Arch repos 2160
Firefox-branded from AUR 2140
Firefox-pgo from AUR 2070
Firefox-suse from AUR 1650
Friefox-suse from Kdemod repos 1560

These were all Firefox 3.6.3 (except for Kdemod repo I think which was 3.6.1) running on KDEMod 4.4 with no addons or themes installed.

Anyway, I thought PGO would be faster not slower? Whats the deal here?

ps Chromium 5.0 had a score of over 4,000 and Opera 10.5 was close to it (Opera 10.10 was only 1200 on the other hand, 10.50 looks and feels very different to it).

What CPU do you have and what flags did you use for this test?

Currently I'm testing firefox-pgo and subjective it's a lot faster than the default compiled firefox. Even if it's just a few points in a benchmark but it's feeling is more flowing and that's enough for me.

Athlon X2 4800+
No flags, just the standard firefox-pgo package from AUR. What should I be using?

This may be placebo. And it is actually a few points below.

I personally have started ignoring Peacekeeper. When I forced 64-bit TraceMonkey enabled in the firefox-pgo package a while ago, the Peacekeeper score did not improve. Other things I did, while possibly ineffective, did nothing to improve Peacekeeper score, while improving other scores (SunSpider, subjective feel, etc.). Almost the same story with new versions of Firefox. I'll stop short of accusing Peacekeeper of artificially favoring Chrome/Opera(/Safari?) over Firefox, but I gave up on Firefox ever giving a good score with that benchmark.

If you want to do a real benchmark, I say, make a script that fetches a website with the browser, loads it completely, scraps it, ditches all prefetch, and does it again, many many times, with multiple popular web pages. That's much less synthetic. I don't even know what goes into Peacekeeper, really.

subjective experience is much more important than synthetic benchmarks, and firefox-pgo just feels pretty snappy in everyday use. with peacekeeper it could actually be just 1 sub-test where firefox is hogging, causing the overall score to drop significantly. since we don't know what the benchmark exactly does, it's only guessing.

From what i understood about pgo and watching to the pkgbuild, before the final build is compiled, a firefox instance is launched in background on an invisible framebuffer to get profiling information.
That could explain why benchmark scores aren't affected by profiling, while the percepted responsiveness is better.

Someone with some spare time could profile firefox against peacemaker or, even better, against his most used bookmarks, isn't that the purpose of profiling?

I admit I was rather quickly about it, but it said the firefox version was not supported.
Perhaps I nightly build will do the trick.

Sometimes you need to override compatibility with you are using the trunk/branch, I recommend that you install Nightly Tester Tools

I encountered a small problem when I suspend my machine while firefox-pgo is running. Whenever it wakes up again firefox behaves very slowly on my commands.

How can I fix that?

i don't experience this myself, but since flashplayer seems to lock my soundcard on suspend/resume i usually just close firefox before suspending (or restart it after suspending). it's not ideal, but i haven't really found a better solution for this yet..
