Hi!
I've some problems connecting to my wireless network with my new Arch instal.. I've been trying to follow this guide: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wir … bsolete.29 without sucsess. After hours of googling and banging my head in the wall I'm out of ideas..
At first I was quite optimistic and tried to connect to my wpa2 encrypted network, but now I've turned off all encryption. When I run "iwlist wlan0 scan" there is listed a lot of networks, mine included, so this seems ok. But when i run "iwconfig wlan0 essid "Optimus"", where Optimus is my network name, nothing happens.. There is no feedback in the terminal and when I pull the ethernet cable I don't have a connection anymore..
Can someone please help me?

may i ask why you are using the obsolete ipw3945 method? is the iwl3945 driver not working for you?

??
I'm using the iwlagn driver, and the iwlwifi-5000-ucode firmware. At least thats what I'm trying to do My network card is a Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN.

oh ok, well the wiki section you linked too was for the ipw3945 method, so that's why i was asking.
have you tried using some sort of network manager, (i.e. netcfg, wicd) to connect to your network?

Oh, I'm sorry! Must have been the result of some random scrolling..
I tried to use network manager, but I did'nt really get the app up and running.. I can try netcfg and see if thats any sucsess

Check your logs after running the iwconfig command above, there should be a clue there.

Tried to use netcfg. Didn't see any example profile for no encryption, so turned back to wpa2. But when I tried to connect, I got this error: WPA Authentication/Association Failed.
I know my key is correct.. So I googled around a bit and got the tips to set the timeout. But it didn't do the magic..
This is how my profile file looks like:
CONNECTION='wireless'
DESCRIPTION='A simple WPA encrypted wireless connection'
INTERFACE='wlan0'
SECURITY='wpa'
ESSID='Optimus'
KEY='s:my_password'
IP='dhcp'
TIMEOUT='40'
Does it look ok? Could not find that much of actual documentation of netcfg online..

Maybe the driver or firmware is not installed correct? When I run iwconfig, this is what I get:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated
Tx-Power=15 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Looking around at random wireless threads is seems like a lot of people gets more output under wlan0, could this be the problem?

I tried to switch of all encryption on the network again and followed the manual setup guide for no encryption in the wireless setup guide (using: iwconfig wlan0 essid "MyEssid").. This time I did it as root, seems it helped a bit!
Now, when I type iwconfig I get this information:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"Optimus"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.422 GHz Access Point: 00:21:04:1D:72:C6
Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality=70/70 Signal level=-30 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
So it seems to hava connected at some level, but still it fails if I try to browse some webpage.. I have also installed all the firmware once again, and added crda to get some more channels.. Neither fixed it. I hope someone can give me a push in the rigth direction

Yay, wireless network
I still don't get the network up and running from the terminal.. But I went back to network manager, did the same thing as the first time, and nothing new happend. Then by some random choices I decided to install a panel while I was trying to get the network to work.. Good choice, because at my panel a little network icon appeared So if you are going to use network manager, install a panel!!
