XFCE4.2.1 remembers previous open apps

When I start xfce4.2.1 it "remembers" the apps I had open in a previous session, even though I unticked the "remember apps" box on shutdown.

How do get get it to start cleanly with no apps open?

Close Xfce, then remove the .cache dir in your home and try restarting it

What you want to do is close all of the apps and CHECK the box, not uncheck it. You want to save your session with no open apps, correct?

It's not a remember apps box, it's a remember session box.
