&$%@ing proxy problems

hello all i have a issue(obviously tongue).  I have a moto droid and have installed a application called proxiod(original huh?)It works for linux(tested and worked on ubuntu 9.04) so theoretically it should work on arch as well.  I followed the instructions from the homepage for the proxoid project here: http://code.google.com/p/proxoid/wiki/installationLinux

and i downloaded the android sdk from here so that i could even accomplish this aparantly herculean task from here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

when i try to run it this is the error i get:
[thompson@arch-netbook tools]$ ./adb forward tcp:8080 tcp:8080
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
error: insufficient permissions for device

Im trying to get this all setup so that this weekend i will have a computer with internet access while out in the field for military drill.  As always any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

Re: &$%@ing proxy problems

Have you tried running the command as root?

Re: &$%@ing proxy problems

wow im retaurded.  yes that worked but id like to mod the permissions so i can run it as me and not as root.  any ideas?  also im trying to make these settings global so that i can do more than just browse firefox.  im using networkmanager(gnomes edition of it) and openbox.  any help for making proxy settings global here would really help.  thank you again in advance.

Re: &$%@ing proxy problems

export http_proxy=http://proxy-server.com:port/
export ftp_proxy=http://proxy-server.com:port/

This is what is set when setting proxy via System -> Prefs -> Network Proxy....

Hope that gives you a few clues.

Also, can you chmod the device?  Or put your self into a group that has perms to access the device?

You can't apply it to all apps unless you setup iptables to redirect all traffic through a certain location. Only some (mostly gnome) apps honour the http_proxy and ftp_proxy variables.

Re: &$%@ing proxy problems

Can someone please help me use Proxoid. I got it working at home where I have an internet connection, but whenever I take my laptop to work (where I have no internet connection) everything appears to be working fine but firefox tells me it can't find the proxy server. If an internet connection is required to get proxoid working properly, I don't quite see the point (kinda defeats the purpose of using it) So is there something I'm missing that will allow me to use proxoid where I have no internet connection?

So what you are trying to accomplish is using your Droid's 3G connection to allow your laptop to connect to the internet while you are at work ,where you have no internet connection?
Just root it and use these.
