[Solved] Changing default file manager (with i3)

Hi!

Whenever I open whatever file in chromium it opens firefox and asks me with what I want to open it. (Not really lightweight. wink )
(The problem is the same with xdvi.)

I'd like to let thunar manage this. Can anyone tell me how to configure this in the system?
(I would be already graceful if somebody could tell me where it might be or for what I might search. I _did_ some research about that before this post.)

Thanks in advance. wink

ehh, you're using chromium as a file manager? or do you mean when you click on a link/pdf/video in chromium?

isn't there a filetypes screen in the settings, allowing you to set something else default than (apparently) firefox?

setting it to thunar won't help i think, since it can't open or run any file format itself

Re: [Solved] Changing default file manager (with i3)

Chromium is very stupid for settings. But that's not the point. I was used to that whenever I want to open a file in chromium I download it and then go to the folder in thunar and open it.

But now I'd like to have quick preview with vim-latexsuite. (dvi-preview) And again it opens firefox for just xdvi! Is there something more lightweight than can be the default 'file opener' than firefox? I thought that this is just some setting in some config file...

I still don't get it. Maybe you could be a bit more precise in describing your problem.
Two things I think you might be after are:
a) do you want to be able to open files with application 'X' directly from within Chromium
b) are you looking for the default applications in thunar.

If it's a), you may want to take a look at this: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=89053

I fit's b), right click on the file, choose 'open with' -> 'open with other application', choose program from list or click on 'Use a custom command', make sure that 'Use as default for this kind of file' is ticked.

Mime-type and/or xdg-open where what I was looking for! (I think)
Thanks. smile

I will need to understand where are the mime-info files and how I can use MimeType.

Just have a search on the forum:

or maybe google as well.

That's just what I've been doing now.

(In fact that was what I meant with 'I will need to understand where are the mime-info files and how I can use MimeType.')

But thanks. smile (Your link was more helpful than the stuff I found until now.)

Sorry, my bad. I misunderstood.
