Arch The Multimedia Monster?

Hi all..

A simple inquiry:

What codecs do you guys use to get yourself the complete multimedia experience? I'm talking here about the web-experience, music-listening and video-watching. Not necessarily about your guys' niftiest mencoder + ffmpeg settings for your conversion needs....:)

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=758973 --------- This solved thread aroused my interest in maybe trimming and tweaking my installed codecs a bit. Not because  it' s a big deal, just to learn a bit here, to see how to get an effective and complete experience..no need to throw in a " a favorite player " thingie btw.......

I'm on gnome, using:

all gstreamer-plugins in combi with totem and the totem-plugin
xine-lib in combination with gogglesmusicmanager
vlc with it's own set of ffmpeg based codecs I believe
foobar2000/Wine with just alsa smile

Furthermore: faac/faad, x.264, lame, ogg, libmp4 ( what's this one doing here? is faad not enough? ), flac...

Obviously the codec and container discussion is actual again as flash/ogg theora/H.264/Xvid are all in the picture for our future webvideo-stuff..hence this thread.

Thanks.

Re: Arch The Multimedia Monster?

There's no reason to use anything besides ffmpeg and some special 'codecs' for
the little more exotic formats.
I'm using;

[mad] mp3 mp2
[vorbis] ogg oga
[oggflac] ogg oga
[flac] flac
[audiofile] wav au aiff aif
[faad] aac
[mp4] m4a mp4
[mpcdec] mpc
[wavpack] wv
[modplug] 669 amf ams dbm dfm dsm far it med mdl mod mtm mt2 okt s3m stm ult umx xm
[ffmpeg] 16sv 3g2 3gp 4xm 8svx aa3 aac ac3 afc aif aifc aiff al alaw amr anim apc ape asf atrac au aud avi avm2 avs bap bfi c93 cak cin cmv cpk daud dct divx dts dv dvd dxa eac3 film flac flc fli fll flx flv g726 gsm gxf iss m1v m2v m2t m2ts m4a m4v mad mj2 mjpeg mjpg mka mkv mlp mm mmf mov mp+ mp1 mp2 mp3 mp4 mpc mpeg mpg mpga mpp mpu mve mvi mxf nc nsv nut nuv oga ogm ogv ogx oma ogg omg psp pva qcp qt r3d ra ram rl2 rm rmvb roq rpl rvc shn smk snd sol son spx str swf tgi tgq tgv thp ts tsp tta xa xvid uv uv2 vb vid vob voc vp6 vmd wav wma wmv wsaud wsvga wv wve

As you can see, ffmpeg can handle pretty much everything (including... blargh, 'youtube')

Re: Arch The Multimedia Monster?

Thanks for your reply, I'm very interested in your answer as I had the impression that ffmpeg is already enough...is there any way to force webcontent to use ffmpeg, through a configurable player? And what for video/audio locally??

Re: Arch The Multimedia Monster?

I dont know what you mean by 'webcontent', but if you mean flash - I use a small
script that, with mplayer(ffmpeg); plays youtube videos. Other then that, I dont
use anything.

Locally, though.
I'm using mpd(which uses ffmpeg) for my music, and mplayer(which uses ffmpeg)
for movies (and radio streams, and occasionally music).
What you saw in my output in the above post was what mpd --version gave me. For
example, I enjoy modules, therefore I am using modplug (that was the exotic
part).

Edit: Oh, and I'm using OSS4. Try it once and you'll never go back to
        ALSA.

Re: Arch The Multimedia Monster?

Tempting....
I just read on mpd the other day. Let me try and I'll report back.
I use totem for playing asf/wmv , flash for playing flash ( surprise...). Wanna try the alternatives though as my solution, though stable, feel pretty "heavy"...
