Pentium D 3.00 Ghz : i686 or x86_64 ?

Hello.
Currently I'm using Arch linux i686. I have a PC whit the following harwdare:

ASUS P5PE-VM Motherboard
with
Intel Pentium D 3.00 Ghz processor (Dual Core, but NOT Core 2 Duo).

The questions are:
what architecture is my processor?
what version of Arch-linux should I use? (i686  or  x86_64 ??)

(Of course, i686 works but, can I use x86_64? The performance will be better?)

Thanks in advance an scuse me for my poor english...
Regards

for your second question, just check one of the gazillion i686 vs. x86_64 threads on the forum

If you don't need any i686 specific apps like Wine or proprietary stuff (Adobe Air for example), I'd go for 64bit all the way. You can check some 32 vs. 64bit benchmarks on Phoronix.com

EDIT: I found the article you might be interested in (link)
