kernel panic install cd

I have been running arch on my laptop for a while now but now i wanted to install Arch in my desktop. The desktop runs Mepis ATM, and is a lot slower then my laptop with arch so i just end up using my laptop all the time.

However when i try to boot the installation cd I get the message "Kernel panic - not syncing cpu context corrupt". I had the same problem when i tryd to install some other linux distributions on that computer(yoper, vivaldi).

Can someone be so kind to anwser these questions:
1 - what is a kernel panic?
2 - why do I get one?
3 - is there a way that i can install Arch on that machine?

Allow me to answer only the last question - you could try archbootstrap. Search the forum/wiki for more info.

Re: kernel panic install cd

what is your cpu? The arch install cd will not boot on anything less than i686 pc's.

Re: kernel panic install cd

The CPU is a Athlon 64 2800+ on a Gigabyte GA-K8NS NF3-250 ATX S754 motherboard. Its not overclocked and uses the AMD box cpu cooler. I installd Windows (yuck) on it and thats working. Ill try and bootstrap it today, it boots just fine with Mepis and Knoppix.
