Re: Has anyone ever been able to leave openbox for good?

I'm a happy Xmonad user on my Laptop... but everything I own that has a mouse attached to it runs Openbox.

xmonad is the only (often recommended) tiling wm i didn't really test because the installed size would be ~500 mb. I guess there's no way around installing haskell?

Xmonad is written in haskell and hence requires the ghc haskell compiler.

Re: Has anyone ever been able to leave openbox for good?

I used to use openbox stand-alone for a few years. More recently I've just been using gnome because to be honest I don't really care about WMs any more.

Having said that, openbox has crept back onto my computer at work (which now runs openbox with gnome) for the sole reason that I need to be able to change desktops by scrolling my mouse wheel on my wallpaper.

Re: Has anyone ever been able to leave openbox for good?

i am using LXDE + pytyle + xcomp-mgr; have not tried many WMs but this seems to suit me fine.  i get openbox flexibility, speed + minimal eye candy.

am i missing out on something here? ^_^  please enlighten me!

LXDE uses Openbox as Window Manager.

I used to use openbox, but I've found the main developer to be insulting and dismissive without any good cause. If I recall right, I switched to fvwm2 after I got tired of that.

Re: Has anyone ever been able to leave openbox for good?

There was time when my desktop and netbook both run openbox.

For netbook it's optimal, because it's lightweight and works fine without compositing.
It has easy way to manage keybindings and overal look and feel.

But i noticed that it's not optimal for my desktop, because i wanted to use transparent terminals and some little eye candy.
Openbox needs xcompmgr for compositing and thats where things go wrong. I noticed that i get better performance with Kwin or Compiz.
So now my desktop happily runs KDE. It's full featured desktop environment and my desktop runs it just fine. It's not that bad to have 400-1000Mt / 6000Mt of ram under usage. smile

I like to try out kde every now and then if i want so see fancy effects, but I won't be leaving openbox. Besides, kde is big enough now that it quickly consumes almost all my old laptop's ram.

I used openbox for a while in Ubuntu, but found pekwm. When I switched to arch recently, I stuck with Pekwm because i'm vain and I like the better themes big_smile Other than that, they are pretty much the same, so no sacrfices (except gui tools for openbox).

Re: Has anyone ever been able to leave openbox for good?

EDIT: o.O double post... Well Guess I'll say how both pekwm and Openbox work fastistic. I've been using tint2 with them, but i am switching to bmpanel, which actually seem lighter on my computer. Either way, I'm just doing it to test out new thing cool

Re: Has anyone ever been able to leave openbox for good?

made an error in my prev message - i am actually using LXDE + pytyle + cairo composite desktop.  i found xcompmgr to be too buggy but cairo composite desktop seems to work pretty well, it has enough eye candy for me.
