I maintain the boxee package on AUR, and in general a lot of people complain that it is quite difficult to get it to compile. As a backup, I keep compiled packages on dropbox as I don't have the resources to run my own repo. This is a bit of a hack, and I don't quite like it
Do any of the unofficial repos out there accept submissions. Would I be able to upload the boxee package anywhere ?
Thanks,
Anish

this is what i mean! linux-land needs a social, p2p, binary package manager.

@anish
You can become a TU and get some packages into community.
@extofme
Patches welcome.
I've heard sth about archlinuxfr building some 'custom' packages but I may be totally wrong.

I don't think its that easy becoming a TU, plus I maintain only like 5 packages

All the packages in the repos are actively maintained. They have to pass QA, testing + they have to play well with others.
To do this well you have to invest some time or get sb else to do it for you.
If there's really no quasi-official repo and even no unofficial one - maybe you can start your own with some other folks who want just a few packages.

I was hoping someone who maintains one of these would be open to hosting one more package :

It's extremely easy to run a repo. Just set up lighty to serve from a dir, forward/allow ports as needed, get dyndns or a similar service to give you a hostname, and repo-add reponame.db.tar.gz *.pkg.tar.*

The compressed package comes close to 80MB, and the bandwidth usage is what worries me.

How likely is 1000 downloads/m ?
Offline
not very, but it will definitely cross the 1GB/m that I pay for

If some people really want it maybe torrents would be better? It's just one package.

yes, but then dropbox suffices now, since both of them require manual intervention

serve it up from the appengine... you get 1GB xfer/app/day free, and you get 10 free apps. dont pay for 1GB/mo crap, your getting ripped off duder.
edit: actually this might be pretty sweet. im going to work on a "repo" app that can run on the appengine. with this, we could all have a PPA of sorts...

Hosting Are really cheap these days, for 4 bucks + domain p/year i get unlimited bandwidth. Ask you're friends they could probly upload you're files on their website.
If there's no luck, probably i can share some space, PM.

imo, if its difficult to build from AUR, then there is something wrong with your PKGBUILD.
you should check the build deps and test in a clean chroot.

Not necessarily, the build is just very temperamental, similar to firefox-pgo. I like the idea of using GAE for a repo. Don't know if it directly lets you serve files, but will try that out
Offline
ive been researching that idea [GAE]... limit is 10MB per file, 3000 files. my plan is to split XZ files into 9.9MB chunks, and name them by the SHA1 of their contents, then upload lists of SHA1s/file. i can make a script that pretends to be a valid repo.
10 apps X 10MB/file X 3000 files = 300GB of free, usable space (theoretical)
10GB xfer/day
if enough people were running GAE "repo" apps in a P2P kind of way, keeping track of individual quotas... we could leverage the GAE infrastructure to realize package downloads at RIDICULOUS SPEED AND AVAILABILITY.
might be up to 2 weeks before i get a chance to write it all myself. if anyone else gives a whack at it, i can help.

for now, i set it up using code.google.com, quite easy

Infact, if any else wants to add their packages, I'd be glad to host them for you at http://code.google.com/p/studioidefix/s … e/#hg/repo
