ttys blank after starting X11

Hello all, this is my first post here. I just installed ArchLinux today and am quite pleased with it. I installed X11 and KDE and all is great except for one problem. Once I issue startx I am unable to use vms. When i press Ctrl+Alt+F1-6 I get a black screen. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7 will bring me back to my X11 session however. Ive searched and it seems most problems people have in this regard is with Nividia GPU's, but I know that is not my problem as I just have Intel integrated graphics on a dell dimension 4700.
Any ideas folks?

Well, this is the most bizarre thing. I downloaded and enabled xcompmgr and switched from the vesa driver to the intel driver and my vms suddenly work smile
