installation Problem

I have tried to install Arch several times but am always stopped when I reach the stage where I have to "review" the setup, I guess you'd say - that is, when I am presented with the black screen with white text, with many choices. One part says "read 93 lines". I don't know how to proceed, how to select the choices and get to the end where the actual installation can begin. The beginners manual is not specific enough, for me at least.

Detailed help much appreciated.

did you select nano to use ( this was on the screen before)
it states nano as "recommended "

or did you select VI to read the files

vi ( well google it )

also just how much Linux experience do you have Arch is not the easiest to install or use .

If you are in the Vim editor, use:

Shift + ZZ

to save and exit

sounds like ur @ the ncurses menu with many file choices, all under /etc. this just goves u the option to edit the install before u zip in. i suggest editing the pacman.d/mirrorlist file so u actually have a mirror to use for ftp and to also give urself a root password. u should be able to go all the way to the bottom and hit ok. if ut using nano, ctrl + x will get u out of the editing, and ask u to save the file if u made change

edit: actually.. sounds more like its askin u to edit /etc/rc.conf. thats ur main system filemconatining what arch loads at start, like ur daemons. followong my instructs for using nano u can still exit it tho. sorry ^^

Because you don't install any daemons/modules between installation and configuration, the only thing you should have to edit is pacman.conf and obviously setting a root password.

Actually i just installed Arch, and selected nano (god knows why), and it was all black as he states, the file didn't showed up correctly, any of them. Selecting Vim fixed this.

If you chose nano, then you can exit it by Ctrl+X.
Then, sometimes some documents might be quitted just by pressing q.

Well, but "selecting vim" is not a fix for "nano broken".

Odd.. which installation disc is it? I have the 2009.08 disc and nano works fine on it.. i686 and x64

Thanks to All for the information. I was able to reach the locahost login and was not sure what to enter. I tried "root" with password and then got bogged down again.

I am sorry to be so inexperienced. I used nano, ctrl + x to move through the various screens...setup my password, installed grub and then (I believe) was presented with localhost login. I entered "root" and then password but was not sure what to do then.

I believe that by using ctrl +x to pass through the various screens that I was using the defaults but I am not sure. My original question was: how do I move through the various screens, i.e., what keyboard keys do I use? The beginners guide is helpful but not specific enough for me.

I would like to install Arch and will keep trying. Thanks for your patience.
