Hello

I've been using Arch on and off for a year now (interspersed with bouts of Ubuntu and others), but have recently made the switch entirely to Arch with a minamalist(ish) setup: stand-alone Openbox, etc.

So I thought I'd finally join the forums, hello all.

Arch really is fantastic for control, learning, and just sheer clean simplicity. It also has incomparably the best forum and Wiki of any distro.

So, hello again, and a special thanks to all the developers and trusted users for something as close to distro-perfection as I've yet found.

G'day.

I find myself having installed Arch as I fancied the idea of a minimalist system that I have extensive control over – having my operative system more as an extension of my abilities rather than a black box that may do a lot of things that I don't like. Perhaps also because your website tend to be the top search result whenever I Google a question related to Linux. I only recently began with Linux through Ubuntu and using CentOS computers at the university. Before that I had used Cygwin through which I gained a basic understanding of Unix-like command lines.

While entering the Linux world I've encountered a lot of challenges related to my use of a minority keyboard layout – Norwegian Programmer Dvorak, tweaked to allow more typographically correct characters. This has required me to configure many of the programs that I use, and I do as such enjoy seeing a community of people who are also very much into configuration of programs.

From using ubuntu, mint, debian, and helluva lot distro's before that, i'm finally feeling a bit at home using Arch. I really like the setup procedure, makes me understand more of the configuration options. Besides that AUR is great, and yaourt makes it even better. I'm going to stick to Arch for a while

Hello, everyone.

I will use my right to post here in the "hello thread". So, I come from the very middle of Europe, a country called Lithuania and I just love Linux. I used Madrake/Mandriva for ~6 years and I now I turned to Archlinux. I am Windows-born user (actually DOS-born but anyway), however when I realized there is an alternative I was ready to do anything at my power to try it out. That was when I got my first Linux distribution - Mandrake 6 (if I recall correctly, might have an older one). I fell in love with Linux at first sight. After all these years I very accidentally heard of a name "Arch Linux" and wanted to find out what it is. When I read "lightweight, flexible, simple" I wanted to have it as bad as ever - I'm a programmer and these three qualities are the most important to me when coding anything (small or big - doesnt matter).
With Archlinux I got a much better view at computing and Linux design in particular. So, now I wish to stay with this distribution as long as I can (or find something better - dont see that happening anytime in this existance) and wish to stay in this community even more
Now aside from "Archlinux Rocks" stuff (yes yes I read the first post but sorry I had to say it), I think the Archlinux design and philosophy more or less defines the entire philosophy of open software and the Linux kernel itself. Using other distros felt like a breeze after the chains of windows but using Archlinux is like freefalling or being as free as a bird. So, my point is that I am very happy to see that there are so many people here who remember what Linus Torvalds did and (most importantly) why he did it. Like dubzii wrote, using Archlinux feels like finally returning home

P.S. Deepest sympathy to the founder of the Chakra Project. KDEMod3 is the face of Archlinux that I see now and will see as long as it is maintained, so I will hardly ever forget it.

Hi everyone I'm Chris from Tampa, Fl. I've been using Arch for about 2 weeks now and I love it. I was using ubuntu before this and debian before that. So far me and my roommate are both running Arch on our desktops and on our file server.

Hello dude, I have been using Arch for about 2 years till now. and always finding the Arch community is growing much more healthier and stronger than 2 years ago.
not having registered as a user within this community is what the hell pity for me.

Zepp pointed me to Arch.

I've used several distros since starting linux in 2006. I've noticed many are starting to suffer from bloat. And what's with reinstalling every 6 months. One of reasons I'm drawn to Arch is the rolling release concept, I like that. Anyway, I've had Arch installed for about a week and I'm enjoying it so far....

Ok so I'll add my hello to this long list, I have been using ubuntu for the last 6 months or so after switiching from Mac OS X and in that time I've learned quite a bit about linux and ended up with Arch, which I much prefer. I like the flexability of it really. and having stalked the forums a bit and sat for hours on the wiki I feel that I'm getting the hang of it. So thanks to everyone and hello!

Hello everyone. Linux newbie here. I've installed distros before (Mandrake, SuSe, Redhat, Debian) but never really stuck with them past the install, so I only know enough to get myself in trouble. Trying Arch on a recommendation from another forum I frequent and so far so good. Just throwing the customary "Hello World" out there.

Hello to everyone here. You all have been a huge help with the archlinux learning curve. I've been lurking around this site for about month now, and love it. My linux use started in 2008 with PClinux. Tried a bunch a distros but I stuck with Crunchbang-lite-64bit the longest. There something awesome about running a lite distro on a very fast new computer.

Salutations. I've just installed Arch Linux today and felt enough joy to socialize in an internet forum
I used Debian before, and Ubuntu before that. I commonly run scientific simulations at work and I've never seen such responsiveness from a *nix box as I've seen today with Arch. Way to go!

Hello Everyone! Reporting in from sunny Seattle, WA!

I'm a long time casual Linux user, though I've only been seriously moving away from Windows and in to Linux for the last year or so on my home system. Up until this weekend, I'd been using Ubuntu. I didn't switch from Windows because at the time, I was doing a lot of PC gaming. Lately though, I've been doing more gaming on consoles rather than the PC and I've been finding that I was spending far more time using Ubuntu than Windows.

I had been doing some reading about other Linux distributions that were available and read about Arch Linux. The feeling I get from the community and how Arch Linux is put together is that there is very little hand holding and a lot more explaining about why things work like they do.

I had a very rewarding experience by reading through the "Unofficial Beginner's Guide" as I installed the system. I had no problem following the document there and in a fairly short order, had a system set up and running how I wanted. Thanks to those that helped created the document!

Anyhow, thanks, and I hope to be talking to many of you in the future!

Hi all,

I made the late discovery and switch to linux about a year ago. Since making the switch I've been trying to cram as much information about linux administration in to my brain as I can. I started and still have Ubuntu on my Ultra Portable but have jumped in to what I thought would be the deep end with Arch on my desktop but it has turned out to be a dream distribution and the best move I've made.

I couldn't ask for anymore help on the forums. Everyones help is great!

I hope that in future with the knowledge that I acquire I can also contribute to the Arch community but until that day keep up the good work guys!

Howdy folks. It's Mr Lachesis from NoVA, and I think I've finally settled on a Distro that makes sense to me. I've working hard to optimize Linux for an old Celeron system and I gotta say, after months tinkering with DSL, Debian, Ubuntu and, recenly Puppy, I read your writeup in the June 2010 Linux Journal and gave you a try. Nice, tidy install, with loads of potential.

I gotta say, I'm a Linux User's Forum virgin. I was saving myself for the right distro. I think it may be the one I've been waiting for.

Now if I could just sort out Pacman, I'd be happy as a clam.
