Java Plugin in Chromium Crashes

I am using an AMD64 architecture and am having trouble with Chromium and Java.  Until recently (I'm guessing about a week or two) I had no trouble with embedded Java applets.  Last night, Java applets displayed only as a sad faced puzzle piece and a banner telling me that the Java plug-in had crashed.  Running from the command line yields the following:

ewaller@odin:~/devel/python/scoreboard 1076 %chromium

OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)

Firefox seems to run Java applets okay,except that, after navigating away from the page with the applet, Java continues to run and consume a large portion of my processor cycles.

The biggest systemic changes lately have been :
[2010-04-25 13:06] upgraded glibc (2.11.1-2 -> 2.11.1-3)
[2010-04-29 23:26] upgraded lib32-glibc (2.11.1-1.3 -> 2.11.1-3)
[2010-04-28 13:49] upgraded kernel26 (2.6.33.2-1 -> 2.6.33.3-1)
[2010-04-28 13:49] upgraded kernel26-headers (2.6.33.2-1 -> 2.6.33.3-1)

I did re-install openjdk6 and chromium this morning just for motherhood to no avail.  I found nothing in the Arch forums that are directly related.  Some hits on Goggle, but none that really relate (the closest match was a Gentoo bug report in which Chromium segfaults on launch)

On a related topic, I may be confusing Archlinux with Gentoo, but is there not a utility to configure the system as to which which Java, GCC, Python, etc you want to use when there are multiple versions installed?

Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks.

Re: Java Plugin in Chromium Crashes

Responding to self.  I installed JDK (which caused the uninstall of openjdk6) and now both Chromium and Firefox behave themselves.

I am not a Java developer (or a license purist) -- I just hack with it a bit to remind myself why I prefer Python and C++.  Therefore, I don't think I care which JRE I use.  In the mean time, I'll consider this a work around, but I would like to figure out way I can use either.

I am off to explore bugs.archlinux.org

Re: Java Plugin in Chromium Crashes

I've been having this problem too. I use Midori web browser, which seems to run openjdk6 on startup. It crashes every time.
It crashed every web browser that uses it.

I looked around the bug page for the package, and there are a couple reports. I'm surprised this hasnt affected more people, its not like its a minor error.

I'd prefer to use openjdk, but I guess I'll try your fix. I'll also report a bug on the upstream tracker. There's currently nothing there about any errors like this, which makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong on my end.

Re: Java Plugin in Chromium Crashes

I can approve that I have same behaviour as ewaller mentioned before:
1) JAVA Applets work with firefox, but keeps running after redirecting from site.
2) Chromium display sad face and says "The following plug-in has crashed: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/i386/IcedTeaPlugin.so
