Mangler

Has anyone tried using mangler as a substitute for ventrilo? I've heard mixed reviews about it from friends and from people on the internet. If you've tried it, what are you opinions about it?

Re: Mangler

I have it, but I've been using Ventrilo in Wine.
Mangler appears to rely heavily on PulseAudio.

Re: Mangler

I built mangler to use alsa and it works just fine for me. Lost my edit of the PKGBUILD, though hmm

Pretty sure it's just a switch to add to the configure.

Re: Mangler

Mangler supports ALSA and OSS. Both mangler and mangler-svn in AUR use them by default.

Also, it works great for me. No problems so far. smile

Re: Mangler

Mangler is simply amazing. It's not often that a port becomes better than the original, but as far as I am concerned Mangler blows Ventrilo out of the water. It's great at doing what it is supposed to do. For example, on Windows 7 I often found Ventrilo had strange issues where it would hang or get stuck in transmit mode. I don't have these problems on Mangler and I'm very happy with it.

I'm nearly certain that anyone who has a negative review of Mangler was either on a much earlier build (even two months ago the project was much rougher around the edges) or they had some kind of compatibility problem with their hardware (be it a weird headset model or strange ALSA behavior).

Can't recommend it enough but, you know, don't take my word for it. Try it yourself; you won't be disappointed.

Re: Mangler

Well, recently tried it out last weekend, and it's an extremely good ventrilo substitute. It works fine with my headset and the gui is awesome.
