Ah, finally. extra/chromium 5.0.307.9-1 fixed the problem.

I configured my fonts.conf to suit my needs and just found out about this. In fact, I also just found out that Chromium picks the crappy Japanese fonts.
Left, Chromium (bad), right, Firefox (good).
My fonts.conf only smoothes fonts that are above a certain size and I love it. I like Chromium more than Firefox, but this issue is kind of dumb, enough to make me use Firefox again.
hey mr shuttleworth im real happy for u and imma let you finish but i just wanna to say ARCH LINUX IS THE GREATEST DISTRO OF ALL TIME

Can anybody be so nice and tell me how to enable CJK fonts in chromium?
EDIT: I had to install additional Japanese fonts from AUR, chromium wouldn't be satisfied with the fonts firefox was happy with.

Hello, anybody could point me in the right direction, on how to fix this issue?
As you can see the japanese characters are displayed correctly in the chrome tab and omnibar but they are displayed as little boxes in the actual webpage. I waited for several versions to see if this gets magically fixed each time I googled a lot and tryed many different things to fix it but so far no luck.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Well, I had the same issue there. Since I'm in Japan (but I would rather use English), google defaults to the japanese site. On this, all the text becomes squares. However, I installed Droid font http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22528 from AUR. It comes with Japanese font, and that fixed it. Now when I go to google, I can actually read the Japanese webpage

OK, installing Droid font solved the problem, thank you japanlinux.
But can anyone shed some light on this why Chromium refuse to render CJK characters correctly while Firefox does ?

from
# find | egrep chromium | less
on / it makes me think that chromium looks at your locale and picks a "pack" of stuff, not sure if settings or fonts or just filler but it might help someone
