I have just bought a faulty [jailbroken!] itouch on ebay
Been looking to see if iTouch works with Linux, not getting much from Google
Is it possible to mount itouch and format it?
That way itunes may be able to restore it.... or I will break for parts

The ipod touch does not appear as a usb mass storage device unfortunately so you cannot directly access the disk as you would imagine. The only way to probably restore the device is with itunes. (I don't think gtkpod is up to this yet) If you upgrade greater a certain version you will not be able to jailbreak the touch again (well this used to be the case a yr or so ago).
For forcing a ipod touch into recovery mode, so you can re-install firmware, genuine or jailbroken
http://www.ehow.com/how_5508348_force-i … -mode.html
You can now mount and syncronise you ipod touch or iphone (without jailbreak) with linux, using the following packages, in aur
libgod-git
ifuse
>libimobiledevice
>usbmuxd
libplist
As you can see libimobiledevice and usbmuxd are dependencies of ifuse.
Also of reference - The iFuse way - The only way with out jailbreak. This also now works in ubuntu without any cli intervention needed. Hopefully when support makes it into the standard libgpod, the other packages will make it into community

Until I get the unit will not be able to tell what is wrong with it, read that itunes does not like jailbroken devices so thought linux would come to the rescue....
Just hope I can get it restored, then syncing with Linux
Or its going to be broken for parts
Thanks for the heads up
Will keep you informed of how I get on
Now if I could just figure out sad face icon without smashing or freezing ipod

I managed to turn my jailbroken device back into the genuine firmware for the device using itunes. Unless you want to keep it jailbroken. Then search round the net for the jailbreak software that will restore the jailbroken firmware.
This might help. I have not jailbroken for a long time now tho and it tends to move at a fast pace, so make sure you readup on the latest.

Currently the only thing that jailbreaks iPhone OS 3.1.3 untethered is spirit (http://www.spiritjb.com). Just restore to official firmware with iTunes, and run the jailbreak. The jailbreak now runs from linux (http://github.com/posixninja/spirit-linux).

Never tried jailbreaking from linux, but I strongly recommend not to try syncing iPod Touch with gtkpod. I tried it twice and the result was always messed up firmware and I needed to restore the iPod. iTunes work just fine under latest VirtualBox, however.

I'm pretty sure I wasn't using iFuse, probably wasn't out yet... Which firmware version do you have on your iThing? I consider giving it a try once again but I'd like to have at least some assurance that I won't need to restore it again...:)

That's kind of weird. I couldn't resist so I installed iFuse and libgpod-git along with gtkpod-git. This time it didn't nuke my iPod, but even though the tracks seem to upload normally, they just won't show up in the tracklist on my iPod. When I disconnect the iPod and connect it again, even gtkpod doesn't list them. Yes, I did click "Save changes" and "Eject iPod":) Is there anything specific you do to make it all work? I'm on 3.1.2 FW...

Also, if you're having trouble restoring the iPod, try to enter DFU mode first.
