New computer - Hardware support available?

I want to buy this netbook: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-10.1-Asp … r/13378215 and I want to know if all the hardware is supported as of now. Thanks in advance.

Re: New computer - Hardware support available?

My biggest concern would be the intel graphics adapter - the intel drivers suck bigtime.
My other concern would be the wireless - I have never heard about 'Acer InviLink Nplify' before ...

Re: New computer - Hardware support available?

Can anyone give me some more specifics - as to whether the hardware is fully supported?

You could just do a search for the model number and see if there are any linux complaints specific to that netbook. Or if you can get to it at point of purchase just bring an Ubuntu liveCD to test out.

The intel linux drivers work more or less OK; the gma950 isn't exactly a powerhouse chipset to start out with anyway, but this is a netbook, not a workstation.  You will probably not have any major problems with the graphics adapter.  Also the wireless drivers are just rebranded Atheros chips, see this page.

Here's how a found out the later:

I typed "Acer InviLink Nplify 802.11b/g/draft-n linux" into google and pressed "search".  It was the second link.  This method is very effective at determining whether common hardware is supported in linux.

he he - I like your google-effort!
And yes - the intel driver will work, but probably not at the right resolution!
I had an AAO (11.6" screen) - and it would work ok, but only with a reduced resolution (1024x768 instead of 1366x768). I needed some acrobatics with the 915-driver to make it work properly ... (I think the posts should still be available in the 'desktop' forum - too lazy to look it up but you could do a search)
