Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

Hi,

I upgraded my arch linux yesterday, but didn't restart the computer immediately. I don't remember what new updates I installed, but as I remember there wasn't many of them. So when I try to login to gnome today, I pass the gdm successfull, however, I can only see the wallpaper without any panel or icons on the desktop. Mouse can be moved, but right clicking doesn't work anymore. I tried to launch an application by pressing ctrl+f2, but it doesn't show anything. The only thing working is alt+ctrl+f1 to the text mode.

Is anybody else having the same problem?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

I can't tell you what went wrong.  I can tell you that the right click is a function of nautilus and ctrl + alt + f2 is a function of the gnome panel.  At the moment I can't think of why those programs wouldn't be starting.  What I like to do when I get a weird update is go to the arch home page and look through recently added packages to see what I installed that might be related.

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

How long since you last updated? You can see which packages were updated by looking at /var/log/pacman.log. Have you tried restarting gdm (from your TTY)?

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

I looked at /var/log/pacman.log . I think the update that caused the problem was the kernel 2.6.33.3-2 -> 2.6.33.4-1.

For past 3 days, I've been updating my system every day.

When I restart gdm from tty, it gives me the login window. Aftter successfully logging in, the default background stays there for a longer time than before, then some noise comes out of my speakers just like the noise you hear when your sound device is enabled. After a relatively long time, the default background disappears and the background I set shows up without any functionalities.

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

After looking at .xsession, it gave me the following warnings:

1. Unable to find provider 'compiz' if required component 'windowmanager'.
2. application gnome.panel.desktop failed to register before timeout
3. application nautilus.desktop failed to register before timeout

I tried to uninstall compiz, but couldn't get it working and still got the same error.

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

Well, I just tried to log in as another user to my computer and it worked fine. So there's nothing wrong with the Kernel. My problem is with the fusion-icon which is set as a startup program when I log in using my regular account. I don't know how to remove that from the list of startup apps using command line.

Any idea which file contains those information?

Thanks

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

the dir ~/.config/autostart/ should. you should probably try to move the [fusionicon].desktop file to a backup directory.

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

I just deleted everything in ~/.config/autorstart/ under my main profile. But the problem still exists. My guest profile doesn't have anything under autostart, either. I think I have to look for the solution some other directory.

By the way, this is the content of my xsession for my main profile:

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

The compiz message is probably harmless, I have the same thing for emerald, and it's running.
I also have the two "error 11" messages in my .xsession-errors.old
I don't know what gnome-panel/nautilus are supposed to register with: dbus? gnome-session? Try reinstalling those, and also check your mirror status to see when it was last updated. Once I saw that you had kernel 2.6.33.4 I figured out that mine was way out of date. You may be trying to run out-of-date gnome-panel/nautilus with newer gnome packages.

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

I have the same problem - gnome is locked during loading with visible wallpaper, but no panels & icons. If I create new user and try to log in it is ok.

I think it's because of qtcurve - I do a -Suy few times a week, so I could easily rollback last upgrade. Then I tried to reproduce the bug after installing each package individually. The only three left are: qtcurve-kde3, qtcurve-kde4 and qtcurve-gtk2, and my system does work.

Right now I have no time to investigate this problem.

Forgot to mention: I use xorg 1.8 from testing (but only this).

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

Just delete:

~/.gnome ~/.gnome2 ~/.gconf ~/.gconfd ~/.gnome2_private

And configure your gnome again.

I just deleted those directories as you stated, but don't see any difference. xsession.error doesn't have compiz warning anymore, but I'm getting a new warning for metacity.desktop. I guess I get this warning because of the window appearing right after gdm window, stating that I have low disk space in my windows directory.

How do you rollback to your last upgrade?

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

I can confirm that the problem was with qt-gtk. I rolled back to the previous version and got my profile working using the following command:

pacman -U qtcurve-gtk2-1.3.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

The only thing I regret is deleting my gnome related directories without making a backup from them. It means I have to reconfigure my gnome again, which is not a big deal.

Yes, see also: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/19479
qtcurve-gtk2 1.4.0-1 should be removed ASAP.

With /var/log/pacman.log you can see packages which has been upgraded and when. Full system upgrade also generates an entry in log. If you upgrade frequently, the list is short. Then you have to pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/packages_in_eariler_versions_from_log. Writing a script which would do that automatically wouldn't be a big deal, but it was the first time i had to do that.

Re: Gnome is gone [SOLVED]

I am also having the same problem. After I updated my system I am getting this problem. gnome gets stuck I can only see the wall paper and the mouse moving. But no icons and no right click working

I  have also deleted .gnome and many other . files and folders still nothing happpend.

Nice that i have see this post. I am in confusion and frustration what to do. I was thinking to do a complete reinstall of archlinux.

This is the second problem I am facing after the update

The first one was with the ppp, the solution was to downgrade the ppp, else the Vodafone usb modem is not working. But it was working perfectly before. So it also took great effort to compile with makepkg all its dependent softwares.

Also with the new introduction of KMS,  the tty fonts look very small. There is also no solution till now for that also.

Yes this worked for me. when i removed the package gnome immediately worked

Thank you.

I also found that no package is dependent on this package.
