[Solved] Cannot detect empty CDR

After I inserted a CDR in my drive, the drive continues trying to read it every few seconds, but it can't.

This worked a month or so ago! And it works perfectly with an old kubuntu on the same computer/drive.

This kind of problem has been reported multiple times the last month. Something broke....

Note that I am not talking about a burning program such as k3b, it is a problem at a lower level.

Up to date KDE 4 arch on my pentium IV system, no customisations, no 64 bits, just straight arch.

Thanks for any pointers...

[Update: after trying various other empty CDR media, I found that once in a while my drive does not recognize it, while other drives do.
So I guess the drive is aging after all]

Hello! What is the brand of your burner?

Re: [Solved] Cannot detect empty CDR

The burner is a Plextor PX-708-A.
Do you think this is significant? It always worked perfectly over the last 6 orso years I had this PC.

Hmm I don't think so...

And how do you start KDE? with KDM or startx?

Does k3b or other burn programs recognize your burner?

Re: [Solved] Cannot detect empty CDR

There is no problem with recognition of the burner. Playing and reading cd's, dvd's is no problem.
Standard setup -> kdm is used.
Again, I refuse to believe there is anything wrong with k3b, if plain kde4 does not even recognise the fact that an empty CDR is inserted. My laptop (kubuntu) pops up a notification that an empty medium is inserted. This is what I would expect KDE to do on my PC as well.

Try a live Ubuntu for example, but it seems to me that you have a broken drive.
