LOL, it looks like Catalyst is better than Nvidia drivers if running fullscreen opengl applications when compiz is on - phoronix test.
@Cr0k: this should be helpful. I also wish you luck with wine games - still nvidia is better at this aspect, i believe thats because wine devs are mostly using Nvidia GFXs.

Indeed! Phoronics benchmarks' results are promising. Finally AMD got the right spin with these drivers

Damn !
I didn't know that the drivers were importants when using Wine.. I didn't play a lot of games with Wine, juste WoW, Oblivion, GTA San Andreas, maybe others... Does anyone has got these games? Any issue with the catalyst driver ?

Well, yeah, ATI < nVidia in Linux world, but with Vi0L0's patched xorg18 repo and catalyst 10.4 all should be fine
Yeah, it seems to be good, but UVD2 doesn't work fine, HL games doesn't work at all, etc etc...

Hey,
I usually don't follow forum threads ... but there is no way I could not notice the effort you, Vi0L0 put in wrapping the ATI Catalyst driver releases into nice packages and also providing all the documentation (the wiki being updated is a wish come true) needed to make my life easier.
Therefor, I just stopped by to say:
Thank you and everyone who helps you for all the work you are doing.
I really appreciate it and I expect you to keep up the good work!

Cr0k - Hum, I have never used wine to play games, but I would guess that Catalyst will still work fine for well supported games like WoW. Also, Steam is coming to Linux ! So, hay in a short time their may be a whole lot of games for Linux. Boy, that would be a real game changer. With Steam and Btrfs, Linux will finally be a OS with no Gotchas i.e. lack of a lot of games (at least for new users who don't know how to get them running), and hard for new users to fix problems arising from updates. (getting way off topic I know) Toughs are the two things left that I hate to say are keeping Linux form being a go-to OS for non-tech average users.

Catalyst 10.5 has been released.
Offline
Yes, aur's catalyst has been updated, repos will be updated tomorrow.
And wow - i really like this release, it's great!
Actually ati did what i was expecting from them - opengl 3.3/4 support, and xvba fixes (at least its now working very well with my hd4850)
Also quotting phoronix:
- resolved issues pertaining to Hybrid CrossFire, kernel panics on hibernation, and suspend-and-resume fixes
Also at phoronix forum some reports bug fixes with wine, aspecially with wine 1.2 RC, so i believe its worth to give it a shot .
Right now i have tested this catalyst only at x86_64, 2.6.34, patched xserver 1.8 - it's late here and i'm going to sleep goodnight

Unigine Heaven 2.1 says: +5% from 10.4 to 10.5.
But I still cannot enable compositing in kwin (neither in Arch Linux nor in Kubuntu).

Great job, new 10.5 catalyst update solved my problem with resume fom suspend.
Keep going!

Could it work if I'm not using testing?

Can somebody please check out i686 [catalyst-xorg18] repo? There is a new catalyst and xorg-server-1.8.1 packages out there, and I don't have time to update ~600MB of packages right now to test it. Thanks
Ps. all repos are updated.
@Cr0k: Yes, it should work fine - i recommend to use [catalyst] repo

I have prepared wine 1.2 rc1 packages.
i686: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4321633/wine-1. … pkg.tar.xz
x86_64: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4321633/bin32-w … pkg.tar.xz
Feel free to test it. I decided not to add this pkgs to repos cuz im not sure will they work well...
Please forgive bad versioning (is 1.2-1, should be 1.2-rc1-1) - i have noticed it after half hour of compilation...
And PKGBUILDs i used:
i686 - here
x86_64 - here

I tried it and it runs beautifully issue-less.
One issue is there in installing: You can't install xorg-server-1.8-catalyst-maximize-fix and catalyst... catalyst always wants to install xorg-server (from the catalyst xorg18 repo).

Its normal - its cuz catalyst got xorg-server in dependencies list. You must remove xorg-server without dependency checking (pacman -Rd xorg-server), and then install xorg-server-1.8-catalyst-maximize-fix (better with -Sd switch)

If xorg-server-1.8-catalyst-maximize-fix provided "xorg-server" (which it obviously does) it would be no problem I think.
Why does it only provide "x-server"?

But I still cannot enable compositing in kwin (neither in Arch Linux nor in Kubuntu).
I was only able to enable composting in kwin after I enabled Direct2D.
(sudo aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,Direct2DAccel,TRUE; sudo reboot).

Also have issues with quakelive, some textures are simply white. Sadly, the enemymodel is affected, too :E
But btw: tanks for all your work Vi0l0, great job!

I have also this problem with UrbanTerror and made a bugreport.
If someone has 2D-acceleration enabled, do you have also strange rendering of http://hardware-infos.com/ with Firefox? Bugreport

Does anyone else have problems with xRandR via HDMI with catalyst 10.5? I have defined a virtual Desktop size of 1920x1080 in my xorg.conf, but aRandR only shows a 1440x1440 virtual desktop and I cannot let it output a bigger resolution. xrandr -q also just shows my TFT capable of 1400x1050.
I fell back to catalyst 10.4 and everything's fine here.

As for Q3A the problem of bad texturing exist only when using lightmap lighting, with vertex lighting textures are fine. Ye i know that vertex looks worse, but its actually better when you are playing online - you can see models much better when using vertex, i also suggest to set up quakelive so every enemy model be the same shiny green one... textures to minimum, brightness/gamma to higher levels - there, you can now play with this quakelive animals ;P at least i was playing that way some ages ago...
