[PPC] OpenOffice won't open after last upgrade

Ever since my last upgrade with pacman (for PPC architecture- including testing repo) I haven't been able to start OpenOffice. When I try to start OpenOffice 3.0.0-4, I get an error message:

The application cannot be started.
The user interface language cannot be determined.

I Googled this, often coming up with permissions being the issue. I tried doing chown -R username:users to the home directory and other shared OpenOffice directories. Yet I still get this error message.

Any thoughts on where else I should look? Maybe a Java thing?

Any help or guidance in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: [PPC] OpenOffice won't open after last upgrade

Tried digging around some more. I'm stumped on this. Every forum points to permissions but I have set permissions correctly for the home and shared folders OpenOffice uses. Also tried setting the language to English in the command line- same error.

Re: [PPC] OpenOffice won't open after last upgrade

Just tried it, didn't seem to help. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Anyone else having this issue on PPC or is it just me? Thinking I might also put in a bug report on the PPC site.

EDIT: Opened a Bug report on the PPC site.

I'm having this problem also on a ppc G3.  There doesn't seem to be a package of the type:

openoffice-en

These packages exist for other languages (e.g. openoffice-fr).  Even though I'd assume English to be a built-in default, I wonder if this could be the problem?

I tried installing different language packs- it merely shows the error in those languages. I'm guessing that's not the issue...

For me, I had to DELETE .config, because it was actually a backup of a linux config file, and openoffice apparently expects something else (or nothing). Once I deleted it (or rather renamed it), ooffice ran fine.

Still no luck... Moved the .config and .openoffice directories, even reinstalled OpenOffice. sad

The error seems to come up even without a .config directory.

Try installing go-openoffice instead...

I would, I'm assuming it needs to be compiled from source (I don't see anything specifically for PPC- 32 bit). Wish I had the time to do that...

Re: [PPC] OpenOffice won't open after last upgrade

I am not sure what happened, but I discovered this minor bug as well on arch64. (I know this thread is primarily about ppc arch!)

For me, renaming .config to .config.bak, creating an empty .config, then loading OO.o worked. (Creating the empty was an accident. parcellite did it automatically, and I did not notice till after OO.o opened.) I moved all of my prior configs back into the new .config, and everything works now.

The key may be recreating .config after renaming/deleting it.

I'm about to try a reboot, and if it doesn't work, I'll come back and edit this post. If it does work after reboot...  My issue is solved.

I keep getting distracted from my webserver project...

huh? oooh...  shiny!

Re: [PPC] OpenOffice won't open after last upgrade

Also happened on my desktop today. Any OOo app wouldn't start, with same message than jskier had. Like him i would find only permissions references to this issue, in strange (i mean from an Arch user POV) locations like /opt/...registry
Never seen that till now.

- Use OOo with this user & ~/ on 2 differents distros
- yaourt -Qs openoffice

local/openoffice-base-devel 3.3_dev300_m76-1 [installé]

- Arch 64 Linux-2.6.33-ARCH

Didn't know which 'config' you guys were talking of. First i went with a

mv ~/.config/.ooo3/user/config ~/.config/.ooo3/user/config_OLD && mkdir ~/.config/.ooo3/user/config

that did change nothing. Then did:

mv ~/.config ~/.config_SAVE && mkdir ~/.config

did work, thank you jskier smile
Would love to user Abiword but have to deal with (big) presentations files mostly bloody 'ppt's
Did move back *some* of the content of my former ~/.config since some of it looked outdated.
