I have same problem. The command "lspci" return for audio card:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 06)
When "modprobe oss_hdaudio" system freeze.

I'll join the club. My sound HW is "00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)". It really is an ALC272 chip in Toshiba Qosmio X300.
