[Solved, Sort Of] Penumbra Hardware Sound

I would like to have 5.1 surround sound when I play Penumbra: Overture.

When I start the game, I go under sound options and select "use hardware: yes", then restart the game.  When I come back, it's back to "use hardware: no".

My configuration:
-x86_64 with all the 32-bit libs I need to run the game.
-using an X-Fi that outputs multichannel correctly with "speaker-test -c 6"

I have deleted both openal libs in the Penumbra /lib/ folder, to no ill effect, as I still get stereo software sound.

Any suggestions?

Here is my hpl.log from an first-time startup:

Re: [Solved, Sort Of] Penumbra Hardware Sound

I found a post by one of the developers on the official forums stating that hardware sound only works on Windows.
