[REQUEST]Advanced weather software (With radar tracking)

Hey community, I am a big weather enthusiast and enjoy watching and tracking storms. Over the years I have searched the web for weather software advanced enough to meet my needs. I am interested in tracking storms individually by cell number and viewing wind speeds. There is a handful of nonfree software out there which I have tried although they just don't quite live of to my expectations. Most are either too simple or give me everything but advanced radar maps.

I have tried storm predator but it's radar maps were just too simple and could not track storms by individual cell numbers. To add with that, it is also limited with a trial period. So far the only software that has been sufficient enough to make me happy is Stormlab. It has a list of maps, it can check precipitation, wind speeds, radar composites with individual storm tracking. It even gives the ETA for what time and town the storm will arrive in.

I guess why I am posting this is to ask if there is open source or at least cost free software which can do some of these things? If not would there be anyone willing to spend the time creating something similar? All I really want is to be able to track the storms by cell I.D. and view an ETA of that particular storm. If you haven't already assumed, Stormlab also has a trial and is only compatable with Windows.

Having a program like this for Gnu/Linux would be very nice as I spend most of my time in that particular operating system (Arch Linux). I have searched for such an application before with no luck. Anyway thank you for reading! Have a nice day.

I did some googling and found a discussion here http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.p … =3100602.0

Looks like there are a few choices, but I didn't look into them enough to know if they provide what you want.

I really wanted to install GEMPACK but their tutorial is badly worded and hard to understand.

Hm, I've been doing some more work on AWeather lately... I don't think there are any Arch packages for it yet, and I don't use Arch myself, but if someone wants to volunteer to make one I might be able to help/answer questions. wink

The old wiki page was linked from above, the new development page is here: http://lug.rose-hulman.edu/code/projects/aweather

There's also IDV, which has quite a bit of support, but is a little tricky to get started with, and requires Java: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/idv/
